All Black star Jordie Barrett weighs in on what his best position is

Jordie Barrett has discussed what his favourite and most comfortable position is.

During the opening four games of the 2022 season of Super Rugby Pacific, Jordie Barrett has featured at fullback in each of the clashes. So far the Hurricanes have won 2 and lost 2 out of their opening 4 games. They were dealt a 10 point loss at the hands of the Crusaders who have been a major force in the competition in recent seasons. The Hurricanes responded well with a narrow one point win against the Blues and again the following week against the Highlanders.

However, in a historic result, new side to the competition, Moana Pasifika beat the Hurricanes 24-19 to secure the sides first ever competitive win. Moana Pasifika joined the competition this season alongside the Fijian Drua in a new revamped format for the league.

Jordie Barrett is a player with a phenomenal skillset. His wide range of skills and attributes allows him to almost seamlessly slot into any position in the backline. He regularly plays at fullback and on the win for the Hurricanes and the All Blacks. He has also filled in at centre when needed to as well. For this Sunday’s clash against the Chiefs, Barrett has been named at inside centre by head coach Jason Holland.

When speaking ahead of the clash this week Barrett himself weighed in on what his favorite position is. “I think 12 is the most comfortable position for me,” he said. “This week at training, I haven't felt clunky, which is a good thing.” Barrett has absolutely no doubts on his ability to fill in in the centre and his 96kg and 6 foot 5 stature, definitely suits the position at second five-eighth.

If Barrett succeeds in the centre for the Hurricanes, could he potentially make himself an option for consideration in that position for the All Blacks? The 25 year old would be competing with the likes of Jack Goodhue, Rieko Ioane, Anton Lienert-Brown and David Havilli for a jersey. It will be interesting to see how Barrett gets on this Sunday.
