Gareth Anscombe has been left disappointed to find out that he will not be playing for Japanese side Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath this season, following the club’s decision to cancel the player’s registration due to injury.
The 32-year-old had left the Ospreys, a side he had been with since 2019, in preparation for his next chapter in Japan, but thanks to a recent surgery his prospects have been cut short.
Needing to go under the knife to correct his groin problem, Anscombe will now be out of action for roughly 10 weeks, meaning that his ‘would have been club’ Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath, have had to look elsewhere for a playmaker.
Instead of Anscombe, they have picked up Argentinean rugby player Nicolas Sanchez to replace the No.10 in their squad.
The club wrote in a statement: “The three players registered in Category C for the 2023-24 season are Sam Cain, Cheslin Kolbe, and Nicolas Sanchez. Due to his condition, Sean McMahon was not registered as a player before the start of the season, and Gareth Anscombe’s Category C registration was canceled due to his condition.”
Anscombe explained his sheer disappointment in a post on Twitter: “Devastated to find out the groin injury I sustained around the time of the World Cup meant I required minor surgery, but happy to say it went well and I should be back up and running in the next 8-10 weeks. Mixed emotions right now, but I’m focused on getting myself back fit.”
