Argentina prop gets heavy ban after stamping on Joe Marler's face

Another suspension was announced today as Argentina prop Enrique Pieretto has been handed a 7-week ban after he was red carded for stamping on the face of England prop Joe Marler at Twickenham last weekend. Marler was shown yellow for holding him.

Pieretto appeared before an independent disciplinary committee after contravening Law 10.4(b).

He accepted that he had committed an act of foul play, but felt that it did not warrant a red card.

The panel, chaired by Sheriff Kathrine Mackie (Scotland), alongside Graham Quinn (Ireland) and Neil Hennessy (Wales), having viewed video footage of the incident, listened to evidence and representations from and on behalf of the player, and reviewed all of the other evidence, found that Mr Pieretto had committed an act of foul play and that it had actually warranted a red card.

They determined that Mr Pieretto's actions had been intentional and merited a top-end entry point based on World Rugby's scale of seriousness, which carries a nine-week playing suspension.

They further determined that 'there were no aggravating factors and that there were some mitigating factors such that his playing suspension be reduced by two weeks'.

Pieretto was therefore suspended from playing rugby for a total of seven weeks.

Due to his playing schedule, with a break until early February next year, he is free to play again on Monday 20 March, 2017.

In the same match, Elliot Daly was red carded for a dangerous tackle, and due to Marler's yellow card  in this stamping incident, we got to see wing Jonny May's hilarious flanking debut.

Comparing the Marler/Lee incident, to a stranger telling people to kill you because of the colour of your skin is ridiculous.

Accusing me of not understanding the the matter by sharing a personal experience where comments were made based on the colour of my skin where I did not take offence because of the context of those comments is offensive.

Oliver regarding that comment made to you, yes that's appalling for numerous reasons... Pleb fan shouting for one.
Shouting about killing a player (I guess he meant smash, but if imthe word was kill, then it's further wrong)
Shouting at children in that manner (maybe he was young too though)
Then if course the racial slur.

The differences I'd see between this and the Marler incident is this:

Someone made a reference to kill you because of the colour of your skin...

Marler got the attention of a guy because of his heritage..

I'm no traveller/gypsy expert and where to two coincide (or don't as ths case may be)... But clearly they're both travelling people... So again, I can only suggest had he said "oi, welsh boy", "oi taffy boy", no one would really care...

Gypsy boy was not a great example of communicating with others... But, he did not threaten Lee with violence/death, he did not insult him as far as calling him a 'dirty', 'thieving', 'scummy' gypsy boy.... It was, I guess the same as someone saying "oi brown boy" or "south American boy" to you if you're involved in a scuffle of sorts.... Sure it's not cool, but when you look in the mirror, you'll see yourself and to describe yourself you might say the same thing.

I'm French but tanned due to South American heritage.
Lee - I'm welsh, I'm fair (and ginger which Marler could have said something about), and I'm from a travelling background.

It's nothing to be upset or offended by. Of course if someone threatens to kill you or abuse you for that reason then of course anyone would understand outrage!

Wife checks Dan's posts on RD.... mitigating circumstances for a comment like that... it was too a Frenchman....

Dan gets off without punishment, Frenchman gets further 2 week ban..

Honestly your bringing up of the "blinding legs" anecdote show how little you understand the matter. That is banter between mates, nothing do whatsoever with racist insults hurled by a stranger. And maybe Lee didn't take offence because he was the one showing class.
So bear with me, I'll give you some context and maybe you'll understand a little better.
I'm French by nationality but my roots are South American. It shows a little. And I must have been 14 or 15 and in a tense game, a "fan" screamed from the stands: "Le 9, bute-le, c'est un cafe". Which translates roughly to "Kill the number 9, he's a darkie". I was that scrum-half and I was shocked, I still remember the exact sentence 30 years later. anyways I'm getting a bit personal here.... Rant over.

Sorry Oliver I realise that came off as a bit snarky, but I just wanted to point out that Samson Lee wasn't exactly being a saint with his language either.

Bit of class does not equal classy, as anyone who has seen front 5 forward throw a successful dummy would know.

The key thing about the Marler/Lee incident is context. You have no idea about their personal relationship off the pitch both before and after the incident, in the same way I have no idea about the incident in which you were insulted. When I've taken my tracksuit off before coming on I've been told to put them back on because my legs are so white I'm blinding people. That could be seen as pretty insulting, but its my own team, my friends saying that. I understand its not meant to be offensive and I don't take offence. If I really had an issue with it then I would say something. If a random member of the public shouted it at me, or the other team, I would them to f*** off, and if they kept going then I'd have fair grounds to make a complaint. As said, you don't know what Lee and Marler's personal relationship. As international props they probably do know each other in more than just packing down a few times. Lee didn't take offence. Marler didn't take offence at being called a posh c*** but the media had an issue with it as they love taking offence on other peoples behalf because it sells papers.

Yep, the ref perfectly handled the situation. These offender/offended sanctions may allow to minimize provocations.
On Marler, he's certainly not the angel or the devil people want to describe. Personally, i just find him very dumb. Especially after being involved in the same type of accident few months ago.

    shit now I don't know!!
I'll leave you guys to sort out the Brit-on-Brit conflict.

But I still think describing Marler as "classy" is extremely strange. He was the one who started the whole thing! If he hadn't held on to the Argentinian's leg, we wouldn't be having this discussion about the finer merits of various insults....

If anything can be taken from this incident then it's that Marler was rightly carded. For that I am thankful! Too many times someone gets nothing for holding on. I think if the Argie had stepped on Marlers chest then a yellow for both would have been sufficient, but face is not on...

No, Oliver, you're French, having an opinion earns you a 4 week ban!

I genuinely don't think Marler was trying to do anything more than be niggly with Lee, and I also find the whole PC brigade a little grating. Is Lee from a Traveller background? Yes... Are gypsies often viewed as travellers? Yes.... I can see how a connection is made... Is it such an awful connection? I mean if Lee had 'stolen the ball' and Marler had said "he's a gypsy, they always steal stuff, what do you expect?" Then sure, I can see it causing outrage... But if he'd called him Taffy boy, would people go mental? Probably not...

I'm not suggesting he shouldn't have been told to shut it etc, but ban from international team is a bit much.

Well that's fair enough but I hope you feel the same way about Samson Lee for calling him a "posh English c*nt" beforehand?

  • oliver
    10:34 AM 02/12/2016

Yeah. Maybe that's easy for you to say?

I've been insulted on a pitch myself for being a bit too dark... So Marler will forever remain an absolute idiot in my book. There is no excuse for racist insults, none whatsoever. And IMO, he should be banned from the national team for that (I know my opinion doesn't matter, but I'm allowed to have one aren't I?).

  • im1
    10:16 AM 02/12/2016

he has the ability to put things in perspective and leave it on the pitch, so yes....

    As did Samson Lee.

Let's try to not get too offended on behalf of other people.

  • oliver
    9:46 AM 02/12/2016

So he cheats, uses racist insults, and your conclusion is "he has a bit of class"?

    Ok then.

I'm not sure Marler even deserved a yellow card. Little things like holding on happen all round the park.

And it most definitely does not warrant being compared to stamping on someones face. Marlers actions were trivial in comparison.

7 weeks is not long enough. Regardless of how much you have been provoked. If you have the opportunity to do it, then they can't be a threat to you as they must be lying on the ground. Unless Marler was grabbing onto his nads, in which case it may be excusable.

Credit to Marler though. Shook the guys hand as he left the field, and more importantly, left it there. Shows he has a bit of class, which is nice way for him to end what has been a very difficult year for him.

I think it's the look down before the stamp that's the incriminating factor more than anything. It's hard to look like an accident when you look down, lift your leg up and bring it down hard like that. Quite frankly I think he got of lightly with 7 weeks. Regardless of what Marler did, you just don't stamp on someones face.

  • hedderball
    10:08 PM 01/12/2016

I think we're all missing the point that if Marler had been a Frenchman he would have got 7 weeks whilst if the Argie was English he would have got off with a pat on the back for a job well done.

  • 9:39 PM 01/12/2016

It is a difficult one. If his leg wasn't being held it wouldn't happen, plus he is falling over and needs to put his only free leg somewhere. But he does appear to bring his foot down hard or more than a step - although slomo will always look bad.
Just for the fun, red card them both as they are equally responsible for the outcome?
I think 7 weeks is harsh but it happens if judged as a stamp.

What I take from this is that if you want to cheat and hold on to players you should do it, because if the other player doesn't react you won't get caught, and if he does react he'll get worse punishment than you.

I'm not condoning a stamp to the face, but this kind of cheating is so infuriating and so rarely caught that they should make an example of whoever gets caught doing it. Marler didn't exactly get a disincentive not to do it again.

From sources, Marler whispered to Pieretto "hey, gypsy king"
