Arizona Wildcat's pre-match Haka has angered rugby fans

As we all know, when one thinks of the Haka, we think of the All Blacks. In reality there are multiple 'Hakas' that take place around the country of New Zealand, and indeed the Pacific Islands too. It's part of their culture, but has now been used at a US college football match.

While all Pacific Island teams at the Rugby World Cup have been performing their own traditional war dances, as seen here, this one is clearly the Haka, except really badly done.

#Cringe.

It's led by Wildcat's offensive lineman Lene Maiava, who no doubt has some connections to New Zealand or Polynesian culture, but something is just a bit off about this, and vocal rugby fans haven't been shy to share their thoughts about it on the internet.

UPDATE (Oct 2nd): The Arizona Wildcats have decided to do away with the pre-game ritual after widespread negative reaction, following the video above going viral.

As reported by the New Zealand Herald, a spokesman told the newspaper that they will no longer be performing the Haka, after thousands of opinions were shared online, and one Kiwi expat started a petition. They have apologised for any offence caused.

"The Arizona football program has a strong lineage of Polynesian student-athletes, and in 2009, a group of players wished to share this aspect of their culture with their teammates and community," the spokesman explained.

"As a result, the Ka Mate haka, which had been popularized throughout the world by the All Blacks and recognized by other members of the team, became part of the program's on-field pregame preparation starting that year.

"Even though that intent remains the same today, we've been made aware that a segment of the population is unhappy that the haka is being performed. As a result, we have decided to discontinue the activity."

And while we're on the subject, as I asked your fellow traveler on this thread, sirelecto (whatever that is), Did Waikato get all the right permissions to call themselves the Chiefs? Did the Scots pre-approve the Highlanders? Did Canterbury clear the Crusaders with the Vatican. Are the cartoonish logos used by these teams even remotely "culturally authentic"?

  • 11:14 PM 17/02/2017

Yeah Ray, and Mozart created Don Giovanni. It is performed by opera companies around the world, and occasionally not so well. And when that happens, do you see Austrians running about like headless chickens prattling about cultural appropriation?

    No, you don't.

  • 11:06 PM 17/02/2017

sirelecto.....you prissy little twit. Did Waikato get all the right permissions to call themselves the Chiefs? Did the Scots pre-approve the Highlanders? Did Canterbury clear the Crusaders with the Vatican. Are the cartoonish logos used by these teams "culturally authentic"?

Look Steve, if somebody in Christchurch actually decided to have a decent Saturday night on the dance floor and botched the Charleston in the process, WE HERE IN AMERICA DON'T CARE. We'd be happy for the guy and realize he probably has a better sense of humor than 99% of the lot of you. In serious times, un-serious people obsess over un-serious things. Perpetually offended is no way to go through life.

  • 10:55 PM 17/02/2017

Get off it, NOPE. I'm sure it wasn't botched any worse than that time back in 1999 when I tried to sing La Marseillaise in a bar. But i enjoyed it, the Frenchmen who were trying to help me along enjoyed it, and we all enjoyed the the French whaling the tar out of the All Blacks down the road at Twickenham earlier that day. Especially loved watching that pissy little Mehrtens thing suck grass as Dominici raced in for the try.

  • 10:46 PM 17/02/2017

Mat, that's all really nice. But giving people a free college education has to take a back seat to to your garden variety Kiwi's insatiable need to preen his social justice feathers at every turn. Surely, if you've been around this sport for anytime at all, you must know that, right?

  • 10:42 PM 17/02/2017

So what have you tickle pilers got against you tube?

  • 10:40 PM 17/02/2017

10stonenumber10 - What is pathetic is that someone halfway around the world would be so bereft of a real life that something this trivial would even get your attention. And that you would extrapolate this nothing story into a comment on a nation whose tapestry is so vast and diverse that the average new Zealand goat f**ker can't even begin to get his head around it tells me all I need to know about your national sense of penis envy.

  • 10:35 PM 17/02/2017

Some Guy, like most of my rugby playing countrymen, we prefer rugby union to helmets and shoulder pads. But if you are masquerading as a bad ass, be assured with a bit of instruction the 15 least athletic guys in the NFL could beat the All Blacks starting 15 to a pile of mush.

  • 10:32 PM 17/02/2017

So Ray - In the middle of your next prattle about American imperialism, perhaps you can enlighten us how it is that we Americans are subject to the New Zealand laws concerning intellectual property, assuming your comment is even a correct statement of New Zealand law on the subject, which I seriously doubt.

Sherriffslade - Shall we compare American music of any genre to that pittance of the art which has dribbled out of New Zealand? How about poets? Painters? Writers?

Do you have an Aaron Copeland, a George Gershwin, a Louis Armstrong, a Miles Davis?

Do you have an Andrew Wyeth? An Edward Hopper? A Jackson Pollack?

Where is your Emerson? Your Whitman? Your Poe? Your Hemingway? Your Faulkner? Your Melville?

  • 9:35 PM 17/02/2017

Dr. G - Unless you are 38 or older, I have played this game more than you've been alive. And I'd wager I've forgotten more about it than you'll ever know.

Keep collecting videos. You're good at that.

And if you can find the closing moments of Dad's Army kicking some Aussie ass in the closing moments of the 2003 final with Iain Robertson's voice over, that and an order of fries would be nice.

My superior essence thanks your inferior essence for your service.

"as if the Americans pretty near "invented" or "crerated" the moon"

Reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, is it , pal? No, we just went there. No one else has.

As the article itself points out, it is those players on college football teams in the Western United States who actually have Pacific Islander heritage who are trying, albeit imperfectly, to share that heritage with their teammates. But not nearly as imperfectly as this crowd

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htCTWZqCMhQ

It is only for those who take perpetual offense and who perpetually offend that "cultural appropriation" can't be seen as the flattery that all forms of imitation are. If you truly lively in a multi-ethnic country like the United States, where we all borrow from each other, you might be able to understand that.

  • 8:31 PM 17/02/2017

Meanwhile keep performing the Haka because exploring anything other than new ways New Zealand can kiss its own ass is definitely not your thing.

I can't get over how bent outta shape people have gotten over this.

As pointed out it's every bit as poorly performed as the Ka Mate by new zealand pre 90s, so it can't be the standard of the performance that is the problem.

There are plenty of non-maori new zealanders that perform the haka so I don't understand how non-polynesians-americans performing the haka, is the issue.

As stated, the school has a strong polynesan connection and now they are being shunned for seeking their culture. That's really sad. You would have rathered new zealand/ polynesia to have encouraged the school to find a more accurate haka to represent themselves or even a new one to represent polynesians that have travelled abroad and succeeded.

    Poor form New Zealand

... and I suspect there was a kiwi moaning about something back then aswell....

Anyway, basically the kiwis are part of a nation as are the rest of us, "THE rugby nation", World Rugby (IRB) are a body in OUR nation, so yes I think that if the Kiwis lay down a challenge (the haka) then a team should be allowed respond in any way they please (that is not disrespectful, like mooning or something..). The kiwis should do their utmost to campaign for the allowance of a response (I'm aware there was a passing comment regarding the French response).

As for Nonu, ok, so not a maori descendent, however he is clearly a huge part of AB rugby, and an ambassador for it, so if he is whining there is no point turning around and saying "yeh but he doesn't matter" because he clearly does matter!

It was a bit of a bastardized version of the Haka which makes it even more cringeworthy.

  • drg
    5:35 AM 03/10/2015

...Whilst you state that you don't have a problem with teams marching forward, or staring it down or w/e, you guys might want to pass the memo onto Nonu, who it would appear is now the only person that gets offended by it...

  • drg
    5:32 AM 03/10/2015

Interesting, because on any video about the Haka, there is always some kiwi who is there stating the same old stuff.. broken record?

Now whilst your comment was entirely off topic regarding this actual video, I'll proceed to add to the list.

The majority of the problem the NH has with the Haka is the response. Teams have been told they're disrespectful for standing up to the haka, marching forward, staring it down, or doing a Campese and not giving a fk about it..... There is also interference from the governing bodies on opposition responses with fines being issued (some of which have been disputed BY the AB's which just goes to show, no one really has a clue about what to do....).

So onto the topic at hand... I'd be more concerned about the usage of the haka; an extremely poor example I might add, by the Arizona Wildcats, as this appears to be a semi new phenomenon, whereas; as you already stated, the age old NH whining that surrounds the haka is just that, age old.

sry, I was talking to the "we landed on the moon, peasants! USA USA USA!" redneck

  • 1:38 PM 01/10/2015

What I find funny is the way that this guy puts it. "That would be the same Americans who landed on the moon that shines down on your sorry ass", as if the Americans pretty near "invented" or "crerated" the moon. Pretty telling about the mentality of some US citizens (stressing the some and the "US". Enough of this US being America crap. There's other people in there). My personal favourite piece of atittude is people like Pallin telling foreigners to "speak American" (lol), all the while they are just about one of the worst people to learn new languages, even when they are abroad.

Trying to invoke someone else's culture is a tricky issue at best, let alone when you do it in such a haphazard way. It's pretty embarassing to the people from said culture, but even more for the yokell that thought he'd look all cool with his "effort"

Even if the All Blacks suddenly become a weak nation, they'll still do the haka. It's what they are.

Rugby's a game and not a war, that's why they're out there to be themselves and do what they love.

Is this a typical crowd for a college football match in the US? Must be tens of thousands packed in there. Looks like a bigger crowd than you'd get for the English Premiership final.

My name is E and I too don't think much of the haka, but I do like the pre-game hype of French team Toulon - the pilou-pilou, it's like a full battle cry without leaping around.

Anyway, I wonder if any one has ever cracked a smile as the ABs were doing that dance because, personally, I think I would laugh out loud.

I love to watch the All Blacks do the Haka, it adds something a little special to their matches.

This on the other hand, is such an abomination, to the point it is embarrassing to all us rugby fans around the world, regardless if you support the All Blacks or not.

Like Cornishann said, if you can't do it right, don't do it at all.

Yeah this is dumb, but so is the Haka in general. There I said it. It feels so good to finally say this outloud. Listen, the all blacks don't need a screaming dance to intimidate people. Their play does that. And the other nations that do it aren't intimidating anyone. They usually follow it up with a loss. These traditional dances were done by small tribes before primitive wars. Rugby is not a war, it's a game. Is it an interesting part of Polynesian history, sure; but how did it somehow transform into this beautiful cultural/spiritual tribute. The "tradition" of rugby teams doing it is only about 40 years old, it was hardly intimidating the first time it was done, remember this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emJyEa4z2Ec The one these college kids did was about 100 times better.
