Augustine Pulu rips pad off post, gets a scolding

In one of the more bizarre moments to come out of this weekend's Mitre 10 Cup, Counties Manukau scrumhalf Augustine Pulu inexplicably ripped the pad off the goal post during their draw with Bay of Plenty. Needless to say, it didn't go down well.

Crafty move that it was, it didn't go unnoticed by the referee - who spotted the infraction immediately. The reaction was simple and priceless: "You can't do that, mate... Put the pad back on."

A scrum was awarded and Pulu escaped with a mere warning against any further nonsense.

Too add to the comedy, he put the pad back on upside down, as the sponsors will have noticed.

Pulu explained his actions in an interview with 1 NEWS. "It was in my way, to be honest. I wasn't too sure about the ruling... I got two minutes break for my forward pack."

He also expressed his relief that he wasn't yellow carded, as that's exactly what he was expecting.

Nevertheless, Pulu finished the match that ended in high scoring 31-31 draw.

Very weird. Ref handled it well.

Cynical: penalty + yellow card. This stopped an attack just like a deliberate knock-on or killing the ball at a ruck on the line and should be treated as such. Reckon he knew the ball could be grounded against the post and wanted to stop it.
