Beast Mtawarira open handed slap earns him ten minutes in the cooler

The Sharks beat the Cheetahs 26-10 in Durban on Saturday night, taking a step towards the Super Rugby playoffs, but had to contend with being a man down for ten minutes after skipper Tendai Mtawarira was yellow carded early on in the first half.

In what was a typically physical game between the two South African sides, prop Maks van Dyk was warned after just five minutes for an altercation in which he sparked a small scuffle.

Around 10 minutes later, after a scrum, he got under the skin of the man known as the Beast, who then lashed out with an open-handed slap.

After the game he admitted his wrongdoings, but still hinted that Van Dyk instigated it.

"They were in our faces. I should have kept my cool in the beginning there, but that's the game of rugby sometimes. Cheap shots come and then you've got to deal with them," said Mtawarira.

The Springbok loosehead will be rested for the Sharks match against the Sunwolves this coming weekend, as the coaching staff feel he needs a complete break following a tough few months.

Ah! I stand corrected, said the man in the orthopaedic shoes.

Nope, the overhead shot you're referring to was 'post-slap'. You can see The Beast delivering his 'gift' right before Van Dyk tries to respond to the said gift with his 2 missed punches.

Don't know what time-stamping school you two went to, but the money shot here is the overhead view at 0:40 - Van Dyk throws two punches at Beast's head. Looks like Beast ducked them well actually!

Clearly this is just a case of two props "exchanging telephone numbers", and no need for any cards to be shown, least of all to Beast, who was innocently dealing with a git.

That's because Stuart Hogg was in a different continent at the time.

Yes my bad, it occurs at around 21 seconds into the video. Disclaimer: I did a full brake repair job on my wife's van in the California heat right before I watched this - I was too tired to read the correct part of the clock....:-)

    21 seconds maybe?

I agree now you mention it, seems like there was some sort of contact from someone the beasts head - like you said his head sort of rattles..

This is out of character for The Beast - I think this is the first time I have seen him strike an opponent. After watching this again, I notice that at 1:51 you can see Mtawarira's head snap back noticeably - he's clearly been struck and retaliates shortly afterwards. The other guy deserved what he got.
