BYU score great try after neat passing and huge charge from Paul Lasike

This great try comes from the (USA) Varsity Cup Semi Final and the BYU Cougar's 60-0 drubbing of Navy in Utah on Saturday. After two great flick passes in the build up, Paul Lasike demolished the hapless Navy fullback to score from a powerful run.

Lasike joined BYU to play rugby but he soon got noticed and was actually recruited to give American Football a try. He is now a formidable running back when not playing rugby.

"They were interested in me," Lasike said a few years back. "They gave me a locker, they gave me an opportunity to prove myself. You know, I wasn't coming on to be a superstar or anything. They were interested in my athletic abilities, simply my athletic abilities."

Having grown up in New Zealand, rugby is in his blood but being able to play both sports means he can contribute where possible, as he did in no uncertain terms at the weekend after coming on as a replacement for injured centre Jared Whippy.

Lasike was part of the move before a neat behind-the-back pass from Jonathan Linehan set up Joe Nicholls, who offloaded nicely in contact. Lasike did the rest, shrugging off the Navy fullback without any need for a fend or hand off. That's what happens if you go high on a big guy.

With the win, BYU (Brigham Young University) advanced to their second successive Varsity Cup Final where they will meet last years finalists, the California Golden Bears, this coming Saturday. BYU won last year's final 27-24 with a dramatic last-minute drop goal.

    Gotta agree with that notion.

At least they are taking about a play that happened with some enthusiasm, whereas those English guys that do the top 14 games ramble on about stuff not even related.

My hairs always all stand on end when I watch some old highlights with Bill McLaren commentating. He really knew how to turn a phrase too, in this video for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqIaXLBk5tQ
"all arms & legs like a mad octopus", "a mad giraffe", "a runaway buffalo" "the baby faced assasin" & "it was as if he kicked 3 pounds 'o haggis".

loved to see the little flick pass, especially at the US collegiate level.

the great Bill McLaren is a redundancy in terms.

Every English speaking kid in the world should have his voice in their head when they imagine their own highlight reel.

Hell, imagine him reading the Edinburgh phone book, or the ingredients label of an Iron Brew.

Or better yet, Apple should have made the Scottish version of Siri using him.

I think most of us who have ever had the pleasure of either hearing him during a game or playing Jonah Lomu rugby on the Playstation 1 would disagree with your comment about 'no such thing as a good rugby commentator'.

    RIP the great Bill McLaren

And importantly for rugby in the USA, not skills you'd perhaps associate with the NFL, and therefore showing rugby is very much its own culture over there.

Some pretty good skills there for an American college game. Hopefully this bodes well for the future. It's good to be positive about global rugby

Well as yet there's no such thing as a good rugby commentator so i don't know what the hell you're talking about. They sound fine to me
