There was plenty of disappointment in English Championship rugby at the end of the past season. Both Ealing Trailfinders and the Doncaster Knights had been denied promotion to the English Premiership due to ground size restrictions.
Despite finishing 1st and 2nd in their league respectively, the two sides had failed to come up with a plan of action that would allow their teams to meet the 10,001 capacity needed for premiership access.
Doncaster Knights have now set their sights firmly on ensuring this does not happen again. The club is intending on building two new stands to increase potential supporter space from the current 5,139, which would see the new East and South stands offering room for 10,015 fans.
The east stand is proposed to be set behind the existing standing section of the ground, with the South stand replacing the existing seated terrace.
A spokesperson from the Doncaster Knights had the following to say:
“To summarise, the proposal is appropriate in this location and would enhance an existing sporting facility both in terms of the quality of experience offered to its users and the overall visual appearance of the ground.
“The impact on the appearance and openness of the surroundings should be acceptable due to the woodland screening around the site and use of appropriately coloured materials. The level of additional traffic generated would not result in problems on the highway network and the level of parking and parking provision elsewhere is adequate to serve the site.”
The Knights have lodged a planning application for Castle Park with Doncaster Council, although no dates for review have currently been set.
