Following their Super Rugby title win, young Chiefs prop Ben Tameifuna was cited for a high tackle he made on Ryan Kankowski early in the second half of the final. The incident was not picked up by the referee or his assistants at the time.

One of the key factors in the Chiefs win over the Sharks was that they took it to the visitors. At times it wasn't legal, but for the most part they got the better of the physical battle against a formidable group of Springbok players.

One of the hits from Tameifuna went a bit high though, connecting with Shark Kankowski's chin. Tameifuna has been cited for foul play as he contravened Law 10.4 (e), Dangerous Tackling.

The Citing Commisioner reviewed the video footage and deemed the incident to have met the red card threshold, leading to further inspection by SANZAR Judicial Office Nicholas Davidson.

Kankowski came away from the tackle unscathed. He is taking up a six-month deal to play rugby in Japan, so was excluded from the 30-man Springbok squad for the Rugby Championship. Coach Heyneke Meyer has said that they are working on a way to include him at a later date.

"It’s a tricky situation for us. I did look at Ryan and I think he is probably playing the best rugby of his life. We spoke to Ryan, and it was just quite difficult for him to be selected right now.

"So he wasn’t selected for this test series (against Argentina), but we spoke this morning and we are still in contact, and hopefully he will be available going forward," Meyer said.

Young tighthead Tameifuna, who usually weighs over 130kg's, trained with the All Blacks for the series against Ireland recently, but has not made their Rugby Championship squad.

Do you think he should be suspended for this tackle? Let us know in the comments below.

UPDATE 07/08/12: Tameifuna has been suspended for one week. He will miss a scheduled pre ITM Cup warm-up match.

I think he recklessly went into the tackle. It wasn't an accident but he didn't mean to hit his head either, but he needs to learn to set himself up for the tackle properly instead of going for the big shoulder bosh every time. He won't get away with that at international level

No one fell into anything here. It was a swinging arm to the head, simple as that. Seriously, an accidental high tackle? Do you anything about this game?

You're not supposed to tackled like that. He went in fully with his shoulders aiming to smash him with them, i've seen this player do it all the time, it wasn't just about Kankowski slipping. Rugby is supposed to be a game of big hits, but safe hits. Player safety comes first.

    This isn't league FFS

If Quade Cooper got a one week suspension then this warrants at least 2 if not more

It's seems like refs are erring on the side of caution and not awarding penalties and cards for marginal hits, are they scared rugby will look wussy compared to league? Anytime u see a guys head fly back like that u gotta think penalty right away. Touchie really blew that one

Should've definately been a yellow card, not sure about a red one though. Maybe should get cited because the ref didnt take any action. No longer than 4-5 weeks though I think.

I think this is one of the cases where the tackler was lucky that the tackled player wasnt injured and didnt pretend to be either. It might look worse for him if Kankowski would've got hurt in the tackle.

And when they saw the replay, they labelled it as foul play, so what is the problem here?

A card would have been ok

I'm wondering whether the citing was influenced by the commentator's reactions...

Yeh, he has done something like that recently... I mentioned how he looked like he got picked out of the queue for hotdogs, but I was shot down by someone telling me this guy was brilliant etc etc etc...

I'm always on the "yellow card should not equal a ban" crusade, but with this I don't know. I can't see it being red card worthy (it's at 90% rating, with 100% being red), but it was reckless and clumsy, and perhaps he needs to get something to think about, but I don't know...

I don't know about a red card, but clotheslining a very tall guy running that fast is just too dangerous, and therefore warrants a yellow at least. Regarding a suspension, I could go either way.

Incidentally, has this guy done a lot of these sort of tackles in the last few months? I remember seeing videos of some New Zealand prop smashing people with what looked like quite borderline legality. I can't remember if it's the same guy though.
