Chris Ashton bags three as Barbarians beat England in high scoring try fest

The Barbarians ran riot against England on Sunday, with Chris Ashton scoring a first-half hat-trick and the Fijian pair of Semi Radraga and Josua Tuisova causing real problems in the 63-45 rout. Eddie Jones insisted post match that it was a good experience for his youngsters.

Toulon winger Ashton crossed for his first try within minutes of kick-off, celebrating with the customary Ash Splash in front of his home crowd.

He went on to score two more tries, the one a beautifully executed chip-kick and gather, making a statement in front of England coach Jones with a hat-trick within twenty five minutes.

Playing for Toulon, he is of course ineligible to be selected for England but it's no secret that he would still love to represent his country, who will next head off for a three-Test tour of South Africa, which starts on June 9th.

Also on the scoresheet were Finn Russell, Tuisova, Victor Vito (2), Radraga, Sitaleki Timani and Greig Laidlaw, while Elliot Daly, Piers Francis (2), Zach Mercer, Joe Launchbury and Jonny May all crossed for the home side.

"We struggled to adjust to the speed of the game," said England head coach Jones.

"When we got fatigued in the last twenty minutes we made some crucial errors in execution and it ended up costing us the game. As an experience for some of the younger players, absolutely outstanding.

"We don't have our top 15 players. It was a test of our depth. We played against a very good, fast and powerful Barbarians team."

Ashton and Barbarians coach Pat Lam were in good spirits post match, discussing the contest as well as other traditional Barbarians goings on in the week leading up to the match.

"It was a great opportunity for me and I just wanted to carry on and try and do what I've been doing all year. I'm very grateful that I was given the opportunity to do that," said Ashton.

"I would have liked a couple more, to be honest, but I'll take three."

Re-read what you've just written. I'm taking it as you 100% agree with me.

    I'm with 10/10...

Plus the fact that when I said he made it to professional rugby, I wasn't suggesting that was the end of the story for him.. I was simply saying the guy is a winner before we even discuss his pro's and cons because he's already made it to pro rugby...

That is a hell of an overstatement! Work rate in attack is amazing, but he is a dry track/fair weather winger. England cannot play 14 man rugby + 1 roaming finisher. The man needs offloads and line breaks, he tracks, changes the angle of attack, and goes through untouched. It isn't rocket science. The Nonu and SBWs of the world need players like him to complete their skillset, offloads are useless without them, just as tracking roamers are useless without offloads, line breaks, or overlaps. Remember SBW's first few caps? Every contact had an offload, most going to the floor because nobody was tracking.

There is no point running at space if nobody can find you. He won't solve England's problems until they change their mode of attack. Playing 10 for a team as talented as the Barbarians is armchair stuff, rumour has it that if you spin on the spot 20 times to get dizzy, put on a blindfold, and hurl the ball in any direction... someone will get onto the end of it and burst into a full on gain-line breaking ball-carry. Throw it, and it will be found. England seem to wait until they can see the shirt before going for space. Too conservative.

Some would argue he's the most significant winger since Lomu, in terms of the knock effect on the wider game. He has pretty much defined the `work rate' winger and scoring tries through lines of tracking. To say "He's made it to professional rugby' is a tad of an understatement perhaps?

I'd forgotten that..the Tipuric dummy! Oh God it's all coming back.

I meant that as Ashton is a winner.. whether he wins anything in the future or past, the fact he made it to professional rugby shows him as a winner to some degree.

Johnny Wilkinson strikes me as the kind of guy who probably got up in the morning, ate the same breakfast every morning, got out their and practiced, at the end of the day he practiced some more, and before and after the game he practiced again...

Ashton strikes me as the kind of guy that gets up, has a shower, wipes the fogged up mirror to reveal himself then winks at himself and goes "good morning champ".. then walks off with a swagger...

So his attitude is flamboyant, showboat etc, BUT he has paid his dues as he is a professional player, he is obviously good enough to wear an England shirt (in the past). Some people won't be able to stand that attitude, others will love it... I don't care either way..

Farrell strikes me as the kind of guy that used to do the latter and is perhaps realising that the former makes him more switched on...

He played wing for a while under Lancaster, did okay, then that 2013 game against Wales happened...

Hi did big time didn't he? Ford is flipping quick though - loved his bounce about and link up with Piers Frances. The power in that Ba Ba's back line was frighting; talk about throwing Mike Brown into the fire of international wing play!

He did get chased down by George Ford though...

Ashton is in form that's for sure.
I wonder if English fans know he broke the record for most tries scored in a Top 14 season?

`Broken through to pro rugby'. wow.

Part of it is media, the built him up as Australia Destroyer Numero Uno, and tore him to shreds when he got worked out/his team didn't break the line. Part of it is stupid things like pulling Tuilagi's hair and biting people.

He isn't in the squad for the same reason Farrell is now captain. Different mentality. Eddie Jones wants to install a culture of Gritty 'Ard Men, not smiles and showboating. Cipriani has been picked as the "reformed renegade", also at fullback. Daly offers a 60m boot and a stint at 13, Cipriani can cover more or less anywhere else across the backline. Mike Brown is there on aerial duty for the games at altitude... Solomona is the physical one, Jonny May is England's poacher/finisher, similar game to Ashton but a whole lot quicker.

Every try was ridiculous in that game. With a bit less coaching, and a bit more drinking + team bonding, I reckon the Bah-Bahs could take NZ. Saracens were fined when the captain missed a media day because he was out on the p*ss with the team pre-season... the same season they went from a mid table team, up to genuine European contenders.

The third half is missing within English rugby. They all looked so bloody miserable. Fear of losing is the biggest killer to creativity within sport. These guys have been stuck together for a few years now, and they are broken. Training and preparation are taken too seriously. Everything is taken too seriously.

The only thing the Barbarians took seriously that day... was their team celebrations after every score.

Hmmm.. I don't particularly have any issues with him. I guess he is a winner in the "I've broken through to pro rugby" sense of the word.. An elite, if you will... Watching movoes you see them come with at least 2 characters, the 1. The cocky full of themselves character who tells himself he's the best, acts like a bit of an arrogant knob, but truly is good. 2. The quiet guy who really is good and everyone knows it, even he knows it, but he's calm and collected..

I suppose he's playing great for Toulon and he has played great for the Baa Bass, but will that for in and work with the England squad? Do they need that 'renegade', in amongst the mix..

... As I mentioned, I don't get why he got gifted that first try... His other 2 were very good...

True. Though I have a sneaky suspicion Eddie will pick him anyway, I still hold out hope that we see a back-row of Wilson, Curry and Vunipola.

I'm not sure he is. He never gets bumped, but backs with average pace and half a yard always seem to get round him. This is the sort of performance that can justify a player getting dropped.

But more importantly... 3 consecutive offloads in the 5m channel (one from a front row)... Try of the year?

"I've got no point to prove" - gifted first try, just to do an Ash Splash at Twickenham in front of the cameras.

Terrible way to re-introduce yourself. The fans might like it, but the opposition don't... and he wants to play for England again as soon as possible? What a c-unit. A very talented finisher, but England are not Toulon. Even I could bag 3 with that talent around me, and I am terrible.

Toulon is an "early retirement" team. They set players up for life after rugby medically and financially. For a few players, all they have is the game, normally at the expense of further education and work experience. Unless players go into coaching/player management, where does their skillset go? "I see you have experience working in teams... how does trainee night shift manager at McDonalds sound?"

He is another pantomime villain, and enjoying it. People like hating him, the longer he doesn't play for England, the more people will talk about it. "No press is bad press". Living in the South of France on a 6 figure contract, I doubt he loses much sleep over what us keyboard (not Wigan) Warriors think either.

Yeah I noticed that. As you say, he's normally reliable on the "making tackles" front. One to forget for him.

Why was Ashton gifted the first try? I'd get it if he's scored 2 already and they gave him the hat trick.. but why the first? Make a point against England/RFU?

  • jimmy23
    11:36 AM 28/05/2018

Well that bodes well for the South Africa tour...

Seriously though, what the hell happened to our defence? Just seem to be dropping off tackles for fun lately. Just bizarre how quickly things seem to have gone to pot in that regard.

That said, some credit has to go to the BaaBaas. Just a day where everything they tried, no matter how insane it was, stuck. That Radradra bloke is a freak, felt like I was watching Lomu vs England in 1995 all over again.

At least we now know that we've FINALLY unearthed a proper scrappy, scavenging 7 in Tom Curry.

Will never understand why the RFU doesn't select few nglish players playing in Top 14, and prefers to pick foreign players and make them "english".

Like Armitage, Strettle, Abendanon and others, Ashton is playing his best rugby years in France.
    Waste of talent.
