Classic Encounters - Hawkes Bay vs Bay of Plenty battle of the bay

Hawkes Bay snatched a dramatic 42-41 victory over Bay of Plenty in their ITM Cup clash in Napier on Friday night. A late try and conversion capped off a thrilling game of rugby, which Bay of Plenty had led 38-18 early in the second half.

Elusive runner Gillies Kaka scored a hat-trick of tries on a night that went down to the last play of the game, when young replacement Ihaia West collected a ball somewhere around the halfway line, and sprinted away for a brilliant injury-time try.

The New Zealand U20 player's try and conversion kept the hopes of Hawkes Bay alive after they looked to be facing relegation with a 15 point deficit to make up.

"There's a lot of relief in the team and a lot of young players really put their hands up tonight after a tough couple of weeks. This is massive and there's going to be a lot more positive chat come Monday," said ecstatic Hawkes Bay skipper Mike Coman.

While West was the hero in the end, it was Kaka that dazzled, with one of his tries in particular an outstanding effort down the right hand touchline, with footballing skills to boot.

Bay of Plenty looked in control but somehow found themselves leading just 38-35 before giving away a series of penalties that allowed Hawkes Bay, and West, to pounce on a famous victory.

Below are nine-minute long highlights, covering all the action from a fiercely contested match

    Don't blame him, he's a Canuck... :p

Pretty sure no-one's said that above. If you're referring to my initial comment suggesting the yellow was harsh you'll see I was put straight on that pretty quickly and, having watched the video again, I can see why.

Collapsed maul not dangerous? You've obviously never played in the pack.

Great call, encourages tackling rugby and discourages cynical play. Well done ref

Almost to the point of being unfair on the rest of international rugby isn't it!

Fair enough, I stand corrected on the yellow.

What about the Masaga double tackle though!?!? Awesome. Practically snapped the first bloke in half.

This is just insane. Sam Cane, Lelia Masaga, Chris Noakes... Any of them could be in Argentina right now. The amount of quality players available for Hansen right now is just comical...

Great match by the way. Bold move by that boy West at the end... well played.

Hmmm not sure if I'd call it harsh. I'd say if there was reason enough to award a penalty try then a yellow should/could come with it and be fairly justified. I wouldn't go as far as beerholder and say it was for dangerous play, although I suppose it is true that collapsing a maul is dangerous... (personally I have found it more dangerous/painful being the guy to to collapse it because of the studs you often receive..)..

Anyway, it seemed like it was a "sure try" therefore it was a very cynical penalty, so much like slowing the ball up with hands in the "red zone" I think a yellow is quite justified...

I think it's one of those situations where I don't mind seeing the referee award a yellow card for it, but if he hadn't awarded a yellow I wouldn't have thought twice...

Harsh yellow? Collapsing the maul is dangerous play. the ref is covered by the book.
