Courageous Ireland beat Springboks in South Africa for first time ever

Ireland achieved a famous victory away from home, beating the Springboks in South Africa for the first time ever, and did so with just 14 men following a controversial red card. If Ireland win at Ellis Park next weekend, they win the three-match series.

Newlands witnessed an error-strewn Springbok performance as new coach Allister Coetzee started his reign in disappointing fashion, going down to a visiting team despite having a numerical advantage for the majority of the match.

Pat Lambie was taken out by Ireland's South African flanker CJ Stander, resulting in referee Mathieu Raynal making the bold call to send the Munster man straight from the field.

The decision was met with anger and dismay on social media, with plenty of South Africans even commenting that the contest had been ruined. Little did they, and the Springbok players, realise that Ireland were about to put in a hugely courageous performance, punishing the lacklustre home side to leave Cape Town with a historic 26-20 victory.

Ireland also lost Robbie Henshaw for ten minutes due to a dangerous tackle on Lambie's replacement Elton Jantjies, but Conor Murray's second half try and Paddy Jackson's accurate boot were enough to keep them ahead, despite a Pieter-Steph du Toit intercept try and JP Pietersen coming close to scoring with time up.

"We knew to come here and get a victory would be unbelievably tough and require a massive physical performance," said Ireland captain Rory Best. "We dug really deep to get that win. If we had sat back and kept giving them ball we would have eventually run out of steam, so we had to take the game to them."

Springbok skipper Adriaan Strauss lamented the errors. "Every time we had the ball we lost it with unforced errors or gave away a penalty. There were easy mistakes which cost us."

Stander will find out on Monday if he will be suspended following the red card, after Sunday's disciplinary hearing was adjourned and will be continued in the morning.

Hahaha, that is passion for you I suppose....

In some ways it's a positive passion, the French it would appear just throw their hands up in the air, tossing onions and garlic left and right, tip their bag of snails on the floor and storm off shouting merde... and wait for the team to pick itself up.. I think it England I get the impression fans just turn around and go "yeh well, whats ******* new?!?! we're doing **** and we always will!" (when they do badly this is!)

Interesting point regarding the lacklustre in the bok ranks - a few of us had a small discussion re etzebeth and his abilities during the Etzebeth and de Jager tumble, and it really hit home how much of a sheep Eben is... he's young so perhaps thats the excuse, but de Jager has a head on him and Eben looks like he needs to be pointed at something and told to go... so when heads drop, he looks lost..

Hats off to Ireland for the guile, determination and masterclass in what it means to play for your team mates! A real display in the true ethos of the game. They made history that day and deserve every bit of their accolade!

The most gutless display of any Bok outing ever, entirely void of any hunger and pride bar the debutant Faf de Klerk.

Warren Whitely was the only other Bok on field Saturday for his alotted 20 mins...he can and should become the next great Bok captain if the Bok brand manages to survive the socio political search for a new identity we are so badly struggling to find.

The knives are are being sharpened BIG TIME here is S.A let me tell you and the omens are not looking good for an Ellis Park revival either with a severe cold front engulfing Johannesburg and the entire Country on Sunday and nothing but rain and further plummeting temperatures since will favor the Irish!

If the Boks lose at their fortress Ellis Park on Sat the Camels back will break!!! It will be UGLY!

Scores of ex Bok players vomitting all over Facebook, Twitter and the broadsheets Sunday and today already!

Ahh yes, the game that we love!!!!

Regarding the quota stuff, I'm glad to hear it. It's a funny (not haha) subject for anyone not in SA or not really aware of SA, which is a world unto it's own. So it's hard to pass a lot of comment on it.. but I know it's used both positively and negatively and commented on +ve and -vely...

So I'm glad to hear someone supporting it this time.

I think SA is going through the pains of the post 2003 England, they've had the big big names retire, then of course Matfield came back as did a few others, to bolster the team, but the young guys are very young and the old guys still playing are experienced, but were perhaps never the first choice players in those positions in the first place... they'll grow and develop, probably far faster than England has, being that the SA following for rugby is huge.

This was a perfectly ok SA side on paper. Some new faces, but enough experienced guys who should have stood up. The half-backs though are new at this level, but they've been excellent in super rugby... hopefully they now realize this is a step above that standard.

Re. the quota stuff - I would argue all the non-white players were deservedly there, or at least you could make a good case for each of them. Jaco Kriel however should be playing, but he probably he missed out to Francois Louw.

Extremely unlucky on the red card. I hope the disciplinary guys decide at the very least the card was sufficient punishment, it was a nasty collision but hard for me to see what Stander's supposed to do differently and still put pressure on the flyhalf.

Otherwise, no question which side deserved to win. SA should have made more of their advantage, but they didn't, and Ireland took their chances. Basically one side looked like they knew this was a game of test rugby, the other, not so much.

I believe I've heard it uttered that it was a largely quota driven team - whether there is truth to this, I do not know...

They might be lacking experience, however they do have some strong names and strong players in their ranks:
    W le Roux
    JP Pietersen
    P Lambie
    T Mtawarira
    A Strauss
    E Etzebeth
    L de Jager
    F Louw
    D Vermeulen
All names I've heard and I believe are quality players ^^

    L Mapoe
    D de Allende
    F de Klerk
    F Malherbe
    S Kolisi
Not heard of these guys before, maybe Allende and Klerk, but not sure..

    L Mvovo
I believe I have heard of him, and I believe he isn't great - (may be wrong)...

But they're definitely missing the strong smart heads, and of course losing Lambie early on wasn't great.

credit to Ireland for the win especially playing with 14 for so long. heaslip and murphy were both immense

it has to be said that this is the worst springbok side in recent memory? the loss of experience is so obvious and they looked utterly clueless

"Pat Lambie was taken out by Ireland's South African flanker CJ Stander, resulting in referee Mathieu Raynal making the bold call to send the Munster man straight from the field."

I disagree... I think that Pat Lambie took out CJ Stander who was lucky enough to land on his feet and only needed to brace his landing with his hand. Why you ask? Well because you cannot touch a man in the air can you? That seems to be the way all the bloody rulings are going these days and I'd say recklessly using your face to hit someone in the arse is utterly outrageous! Just ask Jared Payne!

    http://www.rugbydump.com/2014/04/3672/jared-payne-banned-for-two-weeks-after-red-card-challenge-on-alex-goode

I suspect Lambie is fortunate that CJ didn't tumble, otherwise he could be facing a citing and a ban..
