Crusaders look ahead to another Semi Final after crushing the Reds

The Crusaders finished the Super Rugby regular season on a high with a dominant 38-9 victory over the Reds, sealing their place in the semi finals, where they will face the Chiefs. It is their 12th straight semi final appearance, aiming for their 8th title.

In what was effectively a quarter final, the Crusaders vs the Reds was set to be an classic contest but it was the home side that played all the rugby and outmuscled the would be challengers, scoring four tries to nil mainly due to their urgency and physical dominance.

They put huge pressure on the Reds up front, which ultimately cancelled out the attacking threats of Will Genia and Quade Cooper. On a sour note, the latter, who hasn't been a popular man in New Zealand since the 2011 Rugby World Cup, was booed each time he touched the ball.

Richie McCaw made his comeback, a 15 minute cameo, but the forward effort was led by outstanding performances from Sam and George Whitelock, Wyatt Crockett and Kieran Read.

"We've got to pat the big boys up front on the back tonight for the effort they put in," said Carter, who along with Ryan Crotty, Tom Marshall and Israel Dagg, had the platform to run riot.

"They really dominated the Reds forward pack and made it a pretty joyful game for myself and the backline. I've been a part of a lot of successful Crusaders sides, but the last four years we've come close and haven't been able to get over the line. It's really motivating us this year.

"We want to be there at the end, we've given ourselves a chance now to play another week and that's all we'll be focusing on," added Carter.

It will be an all New Zealand semi final in Hamilton as the Chiefs host the Crusaders on Saturday.

Agree with you whole heartedly. Pathetic is the word.

That actually makes it even more pathetic.

    Bloody sheep.

Instead of using that energy to cheer on their own team they use it to boo one guy who didn't really do anything.

    ....right...

Everytime Burger pokes someone in the eye, it's the Saffas just having a laugh too?

Blame the Cantab fans for detracting from the game....their behaviour reflects in our comments on the game...

Load of rubbish, they're great supporters.

    There's been a lot of negative stuff posted here, with the Crusaders great win being ignored. On a positive note, the attached link speaks volumes about the class acts that are Dan Carter and Israel Dagg;

I find the same during matches with that guy Mtawarira. Every time he gets the ball the crowd all shout 'beast' or whatever, and it interrupts the flow of commentary and more importantly interrupts my concentration. The first few times it was mildly amusing, but now it's just annoying.

But getting back to Cooper, if you're not going to boo Bakkies Botha and Schalk Burger et al who are actually dangerous people who have demonstrated that they try to injure people, then booing Quade Cooper for some stupid comments or a little knee on McCaw is just bullying more than anything. As well as that, his game is based on confidence, and for the good of the sport I'd like to see a confident Quade Cooper rather than one who feels like he's being bullied for no good reason.

Well they're great fans for Clermont, but for the opposition I'd say they're quite rude and unsporting. Outside of the stadium they could be great fans and get along well with everyone, but since they constantly boo the other team during matches I'd say that they're bad in that sense, yes. Don't get me wrong - I'm a big fan of a lot of the rugby they play - but I think the booing gets a bit over the top.

Wes I agree it would be great to concentrate on what happened on the field. It was a great dominant performance by the Crusaders. However I found it was a little hard to focus on it sometimes due to the distraction that was the constant booing of Cooper. Yes nobody will argue with you that people occasionally boo at sporting events. This however was at another level. As a Kiwi it was quite embarrassing to see it. EVERYTIME he touched the ball? Let it go Cantabs.... Be bigger than that.

    Agree with you almost completely.

Just that last part. For NZ, Oz and SA are the enemy on the field. It is said in a form of respect. They are normally our greatest rivals. We are weary of them and give them respect. After a game they are our brothers again. But in that 80mins pure enemy. ;)

Please don't paint us all with the same brush. Plenty of Kiwis are embarrassed by the booing, me being one of them, and I'm in good company with RM, DC, and Israel Dagg

Pedro it sounds to me like you're as cocky as you claim Cooper to be. How exactly would you expect him to earn your respect? It's been two years since he did anything wrong. Does he need to come around to your place and mow the lawns or wash your feet? Get over yourself.

We never heard years of booing for Bakkies, Hartley, Greyling, or Higgenbotham, or Mealamu, Thomson or Hore for that matter. Why Cooper? He screwed up, we let him know about it, time to move on.

And btw, we usually call the other team the "opposition" rather than the "enemy".

Damn i gave West a like by mistake when trying to click the reply button. So ignore that like.

You really think it's PC to say that you shouldn't boo a player all match?
It happens all over the world? Get over yourself. It doesn't happen anywhere else in the world, especially not in rugby anyway.

This is a disgrace and the Kiwis who fail to recognise that and who keep making excuses and acting like they're the victim are as well.

Diving happens in quite a few sports (football,...eehhh diving) but we don't want that in rugby, do we?!

Are you trying to say that the Clermont fans are bad?

    Really?
They're probably the best home fans in the world when it comes to club rugby.

Every time Cooper touches the ball it sounds like the Reds are playing against Clermont in the Stade Marcel Michelin. What crap Crusader fans! It's a bit sad to see one of the world's great rugby clubs associated with that.

I dunno, booing a cult villain is pretty standard fare at sporting events. Booing a kicker is uncool, booing a guy going off injured is definitely not ok, but booing a guy who has been a bit of a dick in the past... I can live with that.

  • 5:34 PM 23/07/2013

Please don't throw us all in the same bag. I was just as appalled as you guys.

For a lot of Cantab supporters Richie and Dan are gods. And those "Cheap shots" aimed at McCaw whether they were real, imagined, intentional or not will probably stick in their heads a long time. Thats fine if they can't let it go but they should take a page out of the AB's book and let it roll off their backs. Be happy with the wins and know that if your opposition has to revert to dodgy tactics then they aren't quality competition and you should pity them that they feel they can"t beat you fairly.

I think it unnecessarily and embarrassingly drew attention away from what was a great Crusaders performance. And rather than adding to the atmosphere of a rugby match. It created one reminiscent of immature school boy bullying.

Probably the McCaw stuff, and the "duhuh people can hate me but I'm good anyway" pre-semifinal, and also that they're drunk idiots.

can someone just clarify this for me, are they booing him cause he was born in NZ or because of the McCaw thing ages ago?....

Great game. Feel for Quade somewhat. This blind hatred of him has gone on way too long in my opinion. Would be nice if the kiwi supporters could stop the booing and appreciate the game.

New Zealanders really need to stop with the booing. Grow up...move on, this isn't football

Nice win from the Crusaders; they'll be tough to beat.

I can't believe that Cooper is still copping that intensity of abuse in NZ! You'd think all would be forgiven and forgotten at this stage.
