Dan Norton burns Carlin Isles on day one of London Sevens

England's Dan Norton smoked Carlin Isles and team USA with his near length-of-field try from day one action of the London Sevens.

The crowd at Twickenham were treated to the sight most fans long for, that of stars Norton and Isles clocking in at 37 km/h in an all-sprint down the field. The chase and score certainly didn't disappoint. With his subtle change of direction for the score, it was Norton who came up the winner.

No doubt Norton will remember being burned himself earlier in the year by speedster Perry Baker at the USA Sevens in Las Vegas and will be happy to have gotten some redemption.

Isles did well to recover and offer chase after Notons's break. All the same, it was hopeless and Isles will have to bide his time in hopes that the roles can soon be reversed.

Despite, the brilliant try, the Eagles won the match 31-14.

The USA ended up sixth overall after losing heavily 26-5 to New Zealand in the fifth place playoff, while England came fourth after being upset 21-19 by Ireland for third place.

Fiji beat South Africa 21-17 in the final to win the tournament.

Hahaha totally agree 1010! I'm not little bit I've faced a few monsters of the game before and my ability to get out of their way has impressed myself and others... One was a raging Pacific islander who took exception to my rucking technique - (I'm sure I probably needed and HIA prior to the incident, why I would do it to a guy my height and about twice my weight I don't know...)... But yeh, I managed to tactfully duck and weave until his team mates grabbed him!

....no joint for me unfortunately! But I did survive the game thankfully..

Never underestimate the power of something big and scary chasing you. Against an Army 7s team in 07 I'm pretty sure I did 0 to Mach 1 in 0.03s after picking up a loose ball in our 22. I blinked... and was under their posts having gone outside 2 + the sweeper completely untouched. Never moved that quick in my life. Thankfully the other half of my pre-match blunt was still stashed safely in my sock, better than brandy for calming the nerves...

Well, if there are two of you then you don't have to outrun the T-Rex. You only have to outrun your friend.

Hahah, a friend sent me something about Jurassic park where they said a t-rex can run at 27kph, and this was faster than a human can run but if chased then it's worth trying to run....

...I was reading it thinking pffft... I saw a human run at 39kph yesterday

7s... where the laws of Physics go to get broken. Older players get left for dead in XVs. In 7s, apart from Senatla and a few 18yr old sensations, most of the genuine rocket men are 28-32yrs old (10 years older than XV speedsters), and seem to get faster every season.

The fastest football/"soccer" player ever recorded was Arjen Robben, he just about scratched 37km/h... one footrace and his record is smashed by 2!

Norton is so much more than speed though. He reads the game so well and mostly makes excellent split-second decisions. There's a good reason why his name is at the top of the tries list.

But that Irish quickie looks the real deal too. Wouldn't mind seeing a 100m race between Norton, Isles, Baker, Senatla and the Irish lad.

Also excellent from RD for posting some Sevens here. More please (including some of the outrageous Fiji tries!).

Canny finish from Norton, avoiding the faster man with some lovely changes of pace and direction.

But he did also get burned on the outside by the Irish flyer on day 2. And please Dan (if by some slim chance you're reading this) when you or your teammates show a man the outside, don't go too high and get fended again. It cost England a good few tries over the weekend and caused me to spill my beer once too!
