Danny Cipriani has today confirmed to the world that his playing career is indeed over after a number of years without a club.
Cipriani last played for Bath in the English Premiership after moving from the rival west-country side, Gloucester. It was at Gloucester that many believe the talented fly half played his best rugby, winning Premiership Player of the Season in his debut campaign with the Cherry and Whites.
In his prime, Cipriani was almost untouchable as a playmaker. Able to spot space in an opposition defence like no other, the well-travelled maverick became a feared weapon in each of his side's arsenals.
The now 36-year-old has taken to social media this evening to announce that his playing days are now behind him, with his final high profile match having come just last year when he geared up for the Barbarians.
Even though l've been semi retired. This is my official announcement", Cipriani said. "I haven't played for a while, but in my mind I left it open.
"Messaging my agent as I sit outside Costa, I realised I don't want to play again. Sobering but also freeing moment. Thank you to all the coaches l've had, taken lots away from each one of you. All the staff at every club who are always the greatest mix of personalities, thank you for often being the heartbeat of the club.
"To the supporters who turned up and wore their heart on their sleeves, thank you for showing love throughout my career, special memories from all the fans of each team I played at. To all my team mates I played with, man I loved it, I know sometimes I could be relentless, we did have some fun out there though.
“[I have] Learnt so much throughout my career and when I reflect, l'm grateful for every moment. Anyway, from a semi - retired now officially retired ex rugby player. I couldn't be more excited for right now, and what's in store in the future!”
Former teammates and competitors have been quick to share their warm thoughts towards Danny after the announcement.
Francois Hougaard said: "Congrats on a great career brother", whilst former teammate Jimmy Goperth Congrats added: "mate, always a pleasure to play alongside. Best wishes for your future endeavours"
Former Bath legend David Flatman also joked: "…unless there’s a trip to Denver on the cards…".
