Darren Dawidiuk banned for six weeks for tip-tackle on Dave Attwood

Yesterday hooker Darren Dawidiuk received a six week suspension for a tip-tackle that took place during Gloucester's 25-31 defeat to Bath at the beginning of this month. Dawidiuk was red carded at the time, before both he and Lua Lokotui were cited.

At first glance the tackle didn't look too bad but the Rugby Football Union deemed it to be worthy of a six week suspension after it was found to be in the mid-range entry point.

The 25-year-old lifted and tipped lock Dave Attwood which resulted in the red card. Dawidiuk pleaded not guilty to the charge, as did Lokotui, but he was cleared of any foul play.

"The tackle was deemed to warrant a mid-range sanction entry point of eight weeks which was then increased to reflect the recent IRB memorandum dealing with such cases, and subsequently reduced by three weeks to take account of mitigating factors," explained Judge Jeff Blackett.

"Unless we continue to apply these sanctions to this type of tackle we will not change the behaviour of players and reduce the potential risk of catastrophic injury."

Dawidiuk will miss five regular season matches, so it is believed that he will appeal. That in itself has an element of risk, as if they appeal and lose, the ban could be increased.

Former Gloucester second row Attwood is no stranger to foul play himself, after having been suspended for nine weeks in 2011 for a stamp on La Rochelle's Petrisor Toderasc.

Martin Bayfield has put together an interesting clip with a practical explaination of this red card decision, as well as how the current rulings around tip-tackles are made. You can view that here.

I agree in the emotional sense with your comment. But technically, on principal, on the laws, this is a red card :(

What absolute nonsense. Shouldn't be a penalty.

But as I've said before and I'll say it again. Don't. Lift. A. Player. There's absolutely no need for it. When a player hits hard in the chest and naturally lifts a player off their feet fair enough. But when they go for the legs and lift it's just so, so, so stupid. Now whether the resulting tackle should be a red card in my opinion depends on the extremety of it but the players should know that in this day and age it's going to be a red card. So why even do it.

In addition, I think Stringer should be banned for waving his arms around and appealing for a penalty. And Dave Attwood should be banned for his lying on the ground pretending he was injured. Get a grip. What happened to the days when a player would have got straight to his feet having been embarrassed that he got his ass dumped knowing that his fellow team mates would be slagging him off the rest of the week for having that done to him.

I'm hating the direction my beloved sport is going.

I see where a lot of you are coming from but evidently this is much more than: "rugby is fast becoming a joke! not even a penalty!"

According to the laws, or lawmakers/enforcers, of which I know nothing about (in their in depth nature) this is 6 weeks worthy.... Referee is only using the guides he's given... a la red card...

You don't get many tackles in rugby more legal than that. In my mind a yellow would have been ridiculous, am I missing something?

I tend to be quite severe when it comes to tackles and tip tackles, but here, even a yellow is harsh.

Thought at the time that yellow was sufficient, but a 6 week ban is frankly ridiculous. Its no where near as bad as Flood on Goode, but i guess Dawidiuk doesn't play for England, so is easier to ban than Saint Toby.

    Hmmm
Not sure I would call that a tip tackle. The guy landed on his elbow/forearm before being rolled over.
2 men were involved in the tackling too.

    Very strange.
