David Pocock scores first half hat-trick against the Highlanders

Brumbies flanker David Pocock had another sensational game at the weekend, this time scoring a hat-trick of tries against the Highlanders, all in almost identical fasion, and all in the first half. The Brumbies led 31-6, were scoreless in the second, but won 31-18.

Pocock was inspirational throughout, and to add to his growing reputation as a serious force on the field and a humantarian off it, he celebrated his tries with the sign language signal for clapping. Something that was lost on one Australian journalist in particular.

Ouch. To her credit, she later apologised and congratulated him on his well earned hat-trick.

Highlanders skipper Nasi Manu, off to Edinburgh soon, described Pocock as a 'demon'.

"He's a good player, he's been unfortunate with his injuries but he's a demon over the ball and you have to have your technique perfect if you want to get him off it," he said.

Pocock himself paid tribute to the forwards around him.

"We knew we had to start well and get the rhythm right. Credit to the forwards, I thought our rolling maul was outstanding," he said.

Last week we featured a video and poll about him and his great play at the breakdown, and the inevitable comparisions to current Wallaby skipper, Michael Hooper.

We asked who you would rather have starting for your side, and Pocock came up trumps. This coming weekend, the two will meet when the Brumbies take on the Waratahs.

"It's a big game against the Waratahs next week, we've got stuff to improve and the Tahs have been in really good form," Pocock said. Below is a recap of his tries and general play.

I have the same name as the great man himself, but I am English. Sharing a name with someone who was the world's best rugby player made the years I spent playing rugby a bit more difficult!

I'm with DrG. Am I the only one who wants to know the sign for masturbation? Is it gender specific? THERE MUST BE ANSWERS!

This thread gives me hope for the future.

McMahon from the rebels is the only Ozzie who offers something akin to their level, which is big tackling and ball carrying.

Who'd have thought Dan Carter himself was actually an England fan... should have emigrated my dear chap!

It's fair enough and I don't argue with his answer.. I just find it interesting that there is an action to describe an action.. >.

Hooper at 6 and Pocock at 7? As a rugby fan it would be great to see, but as an England fan they have a much better chance of beating us with those 2 playing.

Arguably the two blokes I least want to see on the pitch against England in the autumn.

Not sure if you know who she is Stroudos - she is an attention seeking non-journalist writer type who has a shitty column in the Sydney Morning Herald. She shot off her mouth and she got her comeuppance.

I think we're getting a bit too pedantic, after all, applause is just collective clapping...

  • 2:07 AM 28/04/2015

I'd play pocock and hooper together. They'd destroy opponents a la hill and back

  • 2:04 AM 28/04/2015

Yeah terrible that communicating with a disabled friend.

Why can't rugby players just play and get drunk?

Why have values and stand for something besides corporate sponsorship

hmmmm, so it being the descriptive word 'clap' or 'clapping' rather than the actual action itself?

I suppose we all have a different word for 'Punch' but the international action is fairly well recognised..

Especially amongst the French ;) :P (can't resist!)

i think it is more an indication of the word 'applause'... if you watch games with audio description, on the shots of him celebrating, he is signing clapping/applause over the subtitle

Agreed. Should add too that David Pocock is an ARU ambassador on one of their anti-homophobia programs, so even more reason for him speak up, in exactly the way he did.

The world has thankfully moved on, there's no excuse for this type of stuff any more.

I agree. Any form of discrimination should be stamped out of sport. The only thing you should hate is the other team scoring.

Excusing it as just "Banter" is childish justification for ignorant insults. I am all for a laugh and joke within the game (especially when it comes to haircuts), but when it boils down to it, most of the 'lads' who 'give out the most' are often just bigoted racists, hiding behind a smile. There are so many other things to 'banter' about, from dodgy footwear to even dodgier tattoos, why that? It doesn't matter how tough you are, discrimination cuts deep.

Pocock is a top, top bloke. A nightmare to play against, but an absolute giant of a person. That lady must have felt like a complete idjit, and Pocock doesn't begin to rub it in. He's a better person than me!

It's not like he spotted someone picking his nose and told the ref. Homophobic and racial slurs are wrong, and it is precisely this urge to keep it part of the "boys' club" in games like rugby and football that needs to end. I'm all for "tattling" in cases like this.

...Obviously I don't 'sign', (wish I could..) so maybe someone who is in the know can shed some light as to why there needs to be a sign language version of clapping???

I mean clapping makes noise, so deaf won't be able to hear it.. but is their really a need for wavey hands? I mean clapping is universal (I think).. seems strange, but then, I'm not deaf so I cannot really comment with much justification.

It's fine Dan, she apologised on Twitter, that'll get her at least a 75% reduction on her ban..

I would avoid 'telling tales' on an opponent and I have never done so while playing rugby (or any other sport) but I think any kind of racist, sexist or homophobic language is crossing a line. Also, it is unlikely to stop unless it is reported, because referees very rarely pick up on it.

The man has a right to his opinion. I agree with what he says but I have a problem with him using his platform as a sportsman to straighten everyone out.

While I am not a fan of homophobic slurs I am also not a fan of a player telling on another player to the official about a verbal transgression. Pocock is obviously very tough, I just don't believe in tattling. Different culture I guess!

Forgot to put a winking smiley to let people know this comment is made primarily with tongue in cheek. I'm sure you (Dan) will get it, but might not be obvious to the casual observer... ;)

Come on folks, there are hat tricks and there are hat tricks.

Why would a guy clap for himself in any language?

Pocock is a great player but he goes out of his way so that we can tell he is a white knight social justice warrior.

Completely unrelated, but I just came across this and thought it should be shared!

@RD - my apologies if you already have plans to post this - maybe just delete this comment if you do!

As impressive as Johnston's running angle and acceleration undoubtedly are, I'm really in awe of the full back taking his life in his hands to make the tackle!

    1:35 PM 27/04/2015

I'd go further than that in that I think it's very harsh singling out this one random tweeter for voicing a reaction that surely everyone else would think if they didn't know the context or background. Especially if she apologised when that was pointed out.

Anyway, I'm not buying all that Auslan/sign language business - he's clearly practising his release-the-ball-carrier-before-contesting-the-ruck gesture. See 1:38 - 1:58 above for the proof.

I am glad he is back to form... Hooper is good but this guy, world class... He was a pest during the 2011 world cup. He saved Australia against SA. ( got lots of ref help... imo). If he is fit, pool A is going to be even more hotly contested. Going to be difficult pool. But the victors may be the best prepared for the knockout stages.
I am glad he responded to the tweet with class. If his response prevents one person from making stupid comments then it is worth it.

Fair play to her for apologising and I don't blame her for jumping to that conclusion.

It's not the first time I've seen sign language on a rugby pitch, but this was a lot more wholesome.
