Declan Fitzpatrick suspended after being Red carded for punch

Ulster prop Declan Fitzpatrick appeared before an independent PRO12 Rugby Disciplinary Committee today, following his sending off for striking Zebre hooker Andrea Manici in the Guinness PRO12 match between Zebre and Ulster on Saturday.

Following an altercation on the floor, Fitzpatrick was shown red after a TMO recommendation. It wasn't clear to see what started it, but the Ulsterman clearly took contact himself.

A committee, chaired by Simon Thomas, along with Terry Vaux and Robert Williams (all Wales), viewed TV footage of the incident and listened to representations made by and on behalf of the player. They found that the incident was at the low end of the IRB sanctions for the type of offence, carrying a 2 week sanction. [Law 10.4(a): Striking another player with a hand, arm or fist]

In the absence of any aggravating factors and in light of several compelling mitigating factors, including the player's exemplary previous playing record, the Committee applied a one week reduction from the entry point and suspended the player from playing for one week.

Fitzpatrick is free to resume playing from Monday 6 October 2014 and has the right of appeal.

The incident can be viewed at the beginning of the official highlights video below

I'll have you know that I've played in the pack on two occasions, and got hurt each time, so there. The panic on my face when I was sent on as a second row and asked to scrum down was clear for everyone to see. I tried the proper Dorothy response of clicking my heels and whispering "there's no place like home" but it didn't work.

A well articulated and eloquent point Phill. Thank you for joining the discussion.

You are indeed correct, I applaud your astutely noted and expertly communicated assertion that the only difference between Rugby Football and Association Football is the presence of punching and brawling in the former.

Your decision to invoke a condemnation of the 'trendy left' was magisterial. Bravo sir, bravo.

I can only assume that the Daily Mail website was down for maintenance, but I'm sure they'll get it fixed soon, and then you can get back to demonstrating how everything wrong in the world is a result of a left-wing political bias.

Cut could have come from a 'headbutt' or at least head on face contact...perhaps?

My "agree with you" comment was agreeing with Browner, by the way.

    Agree with you there mate.
My initial reaction on seeing this in real time was that it was an illegal block.
Slow motion replays confirm that view for me.

Glad you specified face cheeks. From the phrasing of your comment I infer that you have indeed seen arse cheeks bleed of their own accord?

Bergamasco with hands, forearms and elbows in another player's face in the ruck? That's hardly news...

He and his brother are actually quite good players when they aren't letting the red mist descend... some call it the mediterranean temper, I just call it idiocy of players knowing they are past their peak.

So should we expect a Citing of Bergamasco?, I've never seen face cheeks start to bleed of their own accord !!

If the defender had a legimate prospect of making the tackle ' but for' the deliberate block , its material to the outcome.

Bowes line of running and body launguge tells us he wasnt a genuine receiving option, the correct decision was reached.

This is why TMOs are so valuable.

Legitimate question, not trying to be sarcastic. Can someone explain how that obstruction is different than every other movement when "dummy runners" obstruct defenders. It happens constantly. Why was this called. Am I missing some nuance in the law?
