Josh McKay got back to pick up an innocuous Otere Black kick down field, but quickly learned that you can never trust a rugby ball, allowing Laumape to pounce.
Manawatu went 25-5 up but Canterbury came back to bring scores close, before Manawatu held on for the 32-29 upset win.
