The South African-born Edinburgh flyer is a key weapon for both his provincial side and Scotland.
Playing his club rugby in the United Rugby Championship (URC), van der Merwe faces several of his international rivals on a regular basis.
When asked which of these players gets under his skin, van der Merwe had an interesting response.
Pinpointing Connacht and Ireland star Bundee Aki as a player who gets on his wrong side, van der Merwe said with a smile, "Bundee Aki can sometimes get a bit lippy." Before saying, "He has calmed down a wee bit to be fair."
