Eddie Jones looks set for Wallabies exit ten days after confirming he was staying

Speculation is rife in the rugby world as rumours continue to swirl about Australian national rugby coach Eddie Jones's imminent departure from the Wallabies and Rugby Australia. This shocking twist comes just ten days after Jones categorically denied any intention of leaving his position.

However reporting in the Australian media has stated that Jones has informed Rugby Australia that he would be open to cutting a deal that would see him leave the Wallabies job immediately.

Eddie Jones's time with the Wallabies since taking over in January 2023 has been marked by a rollercoaster of emotions. When he stepped into the role, hopes were high, and expectations even higher. His extensive coaching experience and notable successes with other international teams had fans and pundits anticipating a revitalisation of the Wallabies.

However, the reality of Jones's tenure has been far more tumultuous. The team's performances have been disappointing to say the least. Winning just two of his eight tests in charge against tier two teams Georgia and Portugal. Jones and his squad became the first Wallabies squad to be knocked out in the group stages of a Rugby World Cup.

Off the field, Jones has had to contend with intense media scrutiny and the weight of public expectations. His coaching decisions, selections, and strategies have been dissected and debated extensively, adding to the pressure-cooker environment surrounding the Wallabies.

At it's peak the Jones off-field sideshow saw him questioned about a reported job interview for the now vacant Japanese head coaching position. Initially refusing to comment, Jones has since denied the interview despite reports from Japan that he is the leading candidate.

Speaking on the matter, Wallabies legend Tim Hordan said, "I know it’s true. I’ve heard it separately from my own sources. Maybe he thought if it goes pear-shaped, like it has, Japan is his back-up plan.”

Now, with the rumoured departure, the Wallabies and Rugby Australia are facing yet another period of uncertainty. If Jones indeed leaves his post, finding a suitable replacement will be a challenging task for the Australian rugby authorities. His sudden about-face on his departure only amplifies the confusion and leaves fans and players alike with more questions than answers.

Whether he stays or goes, his legacy with the Wallabies will be remembered as a time of significant change and unpredictability in Australian rugby. As fans eagerly await official confirmation, one thing remains certain: the rugby world will be watching closely to see how this chapter unfolds.
