Eddie Jones on England v Wales rivalry

"I got a letter from a fan the other day saying you must hate the Welsh!"

Posted by ITV Rugby on Friday, March 11, 2016

England coach Eddie Jones talks about the intense rivalry between the two old enemies ahead of Saturday's big Six Nations clash at Twickenham. The winner of this match will be in pole position for the final weekend, and a championship title.

While Jones has coached all over the world and been part of Wallabies vs All Blacks clashes, he says that what he has experienced since taking over as England coach is unique.

Most fans will agree however that while losing is not an option, the word 'hate' is probably a bit harsh and should probably not be taken too seriously. What do you think?

For the edification of anyone not familiar with the incident to which Mr 78 is referring:

Eddie Jones isn't here to make friends, neither are the England team.

Sure, the rivalry is heated, but Wales isn't all that bad... the road signs are confusing and the bridge toll is a p*ss take... but now everyone else has to pay 5p for a bag, we're back on level terms

I think the dynamic has changed in the last 10 years. England were the dominant team for much of the pre and post professional era and were in some cases deservedly given the arrogant tag. That chip still remains firmly on the Celtic nations shoulders especially the Welsh. Welsh victories in recent years have been followed by such relentless nonsense that it has upped the ante. I think it comes down to us all being bad losers, but still I'd never consider cutting off a bollock when England win!

    Same goes with all nations.

Granted players should give their all for the shirt, but you should be able to send an English international to NZ and stick him in an all black shirt and he should give his all for that team! I've learned that through playing for a lot of different teams. It seems a shame to want to pull the shirt on and only half arse your way around the pitch...

So when you're off the pitch or even after the whistle everyone has the game in common and that's all that matters :)

Not the right word to use. It is our fiercest rivalry, it has a history, but hate... no. After the game, regardless of the result, an Englishman or a Welshman should feel safe having a beer in the other's capital and enjoy a bit of healthy banter. That's rugby.
