With Steve Borthwick at the helm of English rugby, it’s all starting to look a little different around the England camp. Earlier on this week Borthwick brought together 45 of Englands brightest players in a training camp that was the former Leicester mans first as head coach.
Despite no official list of players being released, there have been reports and confirmations of the likes of Dan Cole being recalled to the national side for the first time since 2019. Also young winger, Caden Murley, was back training in England colours after a disappointing Autumn campaign in which he saw no action.
The Borthwick shake up has taken another step forward today, as it has been announced that Harlequins assistant, Nick Evans, has been named as England’s new attack coach.
England have been regularly slated in recent times over their lack of creativity in attack, something that seemed to be somewhat stifled under Eddie Jones. Evans is only expected to be a short term fix as he will head back to Quins after the championship, however it does give a clear indication of Borthwicks intentions.
Speaking about his new hire, Borthwick said: “ ‘I am delighted Nick is joining our team ahead of the Six Nations.
‘Nick brings with him a wealth of different experiences as a player and coach which will be incredibly valuable to the growth of our team.
“I know Nick understands the pride and responsibility that comes with representing your country.
“We aim to build an England team our nation can be proud of and I know our supporters will be very excited by what Nick can bring to our side.
“We’d particularly like to thank Harlequins for their support in allowing Nick to work with us during this period. It’s a great example of club and country working together.”
It will be hoped by England fans that Evans can bring with him a wealth of experience and intuition that will get this squad firing for the upcoming Six Nations. His experience with the Harlequins squad in particular will no doubt bring a more natural game out of the likes of Marcus Smith.
England have refused to comment on the future of the existing attack coach Martin Gleeson.
