Steve Borthwick has announced that Anthony Watson will be out of action for a few weeks due to a calf injury sustained in training. This will leave the winger sidelined for what is expected to be the entirety of the World Cup.
Watson was originally named in England's 33-man England squad but is now likely to be replaced by Jonny May in the final squad which has a deadline of 28th August.
“In the game against Ireland, Anthony Watson suffered an injury to his calf which means he can’t play for a number of weeks,” Borthwick said.
“As such he will not be part of the 33 that travels to France next week. We’re all really disappointed for him.”
The unattached player is currently under an RFU contract specifically designed to ensure the player was supported financially whilst playing for England during the World Cup. No information has been provided as to how his injury will affect this.
In the meantime, utility back Elliot Daly is hindered by a knee injury, rendering him unavailable for the upcoming weekend. Nevertheless, there is optimism that he will recuperate in time for the World Cup. Wing Henry Arundell is also in the process of recovering from a back spasm.
Flanker Tom Curry is steadily progressing in his rehabilitation from an ankle injury, whereas lock George Martin remains sidelined due to a knee injury.
England's squad has already suffered the loss of scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet, who sustained an ankle injury ahead of the tournament and has since been substituted by Alex Mitchell who will start on Saturday.
