England too strong for Argentina in first Test in Salta

England scored four tries as they beat Argentina 32-3 in the first of their two Test series in Salta on Saturday. Three tries were scored in the first half, before debutant Billy Vunipola crossed in the final minute of the match.

With some key men on the Lions tour, England have a new look side but produced a strong first half performance, with David Strettle, Billy Twelvetrees and Ben Morgan all crossing for tries.

Argentina themselves had a fairly experimental side, which didn't pay off as Freddie Burns kicked 12 points for the visitors, who led 25-3 at half time.

No England side has ever won a series 2-0 in Argentina, so going one-nil up a massive step towards achieving the feat that Bill Beaumont's 1981 side last came closest to doing.

"If you'd said to me at the start of the day that we'd win by that scoreline, I'd have taken it," said pleased coach Stuart Lancaster.

The two sides meet in Buenos Aires next weekend for the deciding game, where going by the first Test, England will probably be favourites to win.

"The goal at the start was to come away with two wins from two tests, which has not been done by England before, so, part two to come," Lancaster added.

People are forgeting that (Argentina) the first chose 21 players are being rested for the rugby championships so in reality it was Englands A team (yes they are missing a few players 5 or 6) against an Argentine B squad!

It's not sniping. Sniping is when the scrum half actually tries to take the gap. And if there is a gap then yes I would like that.

I think they were rested. Just like England, the Argentines probably see the 2 tests as an opportunity for bringing in new players, hence why stars like Juan Martin Hernandez are not playing and instead a bunch of Argentine club players are.

From what I can see those steps only work when the team is going forward over the gain line. Youngs' problem is that he tries it when England are going backwards and he inevitably gets scragged by a guard. But when done right those runs tear defences apart. The also take the pressure off the 10 because the defence is so petrified of the 9. Will Genia vs Wales anyone?

@Woodenman I may be saying this with English bias but he is in the top 5 number 8 in the world, Read-Parrise-Picamoles-Morgan possibly I now know that someone will mention a name I forgot that makes me look stupid !

I actually found Andy Robinson's commentary quite interesting. He didn't make anything *sound* interesting, i.e. his voice is a bit boring, but I liked some of his insight. Preferable to Stuart Barnes for sure.

@FatProp- couldn't agree more. If Morgan had been fit all year and played in the 6 nations he would be starting in the first test for the Lions in two weeks.

@Rob are you serious about Andy Robinson's commentary? Has to be the dullest commentator around. Added absolutely nothing and at times his inputs were nothing other than cringeworthy. Enjoyed the BBC coverage apart from that though.

Happy with the game only quarrel was that strettle played instead of May and blew a few chances just seems like a strange selection policy. Also shows how much we missed Morgan during the 6 nations !

From a neutral perspective: England played awesome at times. Better then I have seen all Six Nations. It might have been an average Argentinian team but you still have to take your chances.

They blew quite a few by the way. That might be some cause for concern.
