Fans thrilled as 96 cap Welsh international recalled to squad

As the rugby world builds up its excitement for the Autumn internationals, the squad lists are now being released. For Wales, it’s an exciting mix of youth and experience that looks to turn around their recent mixed fortunes.

Wales will be without charismatic fly-half Dan Bigger due to an unfortunate knee injury picked up recently while playing for club side Northampton Saints. The Welsh fans need not worry when it comes to goal kicking however, as the former Six Nations Player of the Year, Leigh Halfpenny, returns to the side for the first time since July 2021.

Halfpenny had suffered a knee injury himself in Wales’ summer international against Canada back last year, which has kept him out of action entirely until very recently. The 33-year-old has been one of Wales’ most influential players ever since his introduction to the team back in 2008, and will provide some much-required experience in the Welsh backline.

With the world cup just a year away, Halfpenny will be looking at securing that 15 spot as his own as Liam Williams misses out due to injury.

Also to return are back-rower Justin Tipuric and hooker Ken Owens who have both missed out on over a year of competitive rugby themselves due to injury.
