It's with deep sadness that today we've learned of the passing of the great All Black flanker, Jerry Collins. The 34-year-old, along with his partner Alana Madill, died in a car crash in France last night. Their baby daughter Ayla remains in critical condition.

Details of the incident will no doubt emerge throughout the course of the next few days, but his long-standing manager Tim Castle, via New Zealand Rugby, released a statement earlier.

"I have been in touch with Jerry's father Frank and other members of his family who are in Samoa at the moment. It’s obviously a terribly difficult time for them and together with New Zealand Rugby we are doing all we can to support them.

"I have also been in touch with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who are also doing everything they can to ensure that baby Ayla is getting all the care and support she needs. I am very grateful for their support.

"The family would also like to thank everyone for their messages of support and have asked for privacy at this time."

Born in Apia, Samoa, Collins went on to play for Wellington in 1999, before making his Super Rugby and All Blacks debuts in 2001. He played a total of 74 matches for the Hurricanes, and 50 for the All Blacks, including 48 Tests.

He captained New Zealand against Argentina in 2006, and later played his rugby at the Ospreys in Wales, as well as spending time playing in Japan with the Yamaha club, and France with Toulon. Most recently, he had signed to join Narbonne this year.

SANZAR CEO Greg Peters said: "Jerry Collins is an undisputed legend of the game for Wellington, the Hurricanes and the All Blacks. He inspired all of those around him with his passion and love for the game throughout a highly decorated career for club and country.

"Jerry was a wonderful person who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Thoughts and prayers go out to both he and Alana's family and especially to their young daughter who is bravely fighting for life.

"Rest in peace JC, as the rugby world mourns and remembers one of its greats."

Wales captain Sam Warburton tweeted: "What a huge loss. Inspiration to many young players growing up including myself. RIP Jerry Collins and his wife Alana. Best wishes baby Ayla."

Collins has featured on Rugbydump since the early days, so is a firm favourite as he's always been one of the hardest tacklers in the sport, and throughout his Hurricanes and All Blacks career was often right in the thick of it when it mattered most.

We send sincere condolences to his family, friends and former team mates, and loved ones of partner Alana, and of course thoughts are with baby Ayla as she fights for her life.

May he Rest in Peace.

His baby daughter is now saved. She woke up about one week ago and she got brain surgery. She can breathe on her own and she's accepting the bib.
Doctors are monitoring her to check what problems she could have.

Learnt on Friday morning from a colleague the passing of Jerry Collins and his wife. Could not believe it.
Their baby Ayla was in desperate state at first, and she's now in critical state, which is a little better (or less worse).
What happened is their car stopped on the motorway for an unknown reason, and a big bus rammed the car from behind. Don't even know how the baby could manage to survive this.
Photo of the car here if you're strong-hearted:

Also fundraising in New Zealand and a Henri Tuilagi jubilee event on sat 6th in Perpignan (South of France) with benefits sent to the family.
The Toulon club where JC played one year had all its players with black armbands on sat 6th. And the Baby Blacks at the U20 RWC dedicated their Haka to Jerry.

    RIP Jerry Collins

    Very sad news.

A real shock to go on Rugbydump on a Friday afternoon expecting to laugh at something and to see this.

Only 34 too? Feels like he's been around in professional rugby for decades.

    Just heart-breaking.

He was a legend on the field, and from everything you hear, an absolute champion off it - the Barnstaple story, for example, is legendary. I can only hope that his baby girl makes a full recovery, and lives to learn how loved and admired her dad was by so many in the game.

Barnstaple RUFC 2nd team, because he wanted to play some Rugby and would have had to be registered to play for the 1sts.

They took a photo after the game as a team, but one prop had hurt his neck and so while they were waiting for the ambulance, Jerry Collins lay down next to him for a photo while the medic holds his neck steady! A class act.

Horrible story. Jerry Collins was a great player and always showed a wonderful attitude.

Does anyone else remember him turning up for some obscure English amateur club's 2nd side then wearing that team's socks when he played for the Barbarians? He understood what rugby was supposed to be about.

RIP Collins. You've inspired many young Kiwis of my generation to dream.

    That is massively tragic!

Thoughts and prayers are with the families. Hope the little one pulls through!

So sad to hear of these deaths. I hope their daughter pulls through. Hopefully she is too young to fully understand the tragedy that has hit their family. RIP.

So sad. Not many All Blacks who endear themselves to me - but you were a dead set legend, on my list of "blokes I'd love to have a beer with". I guess we'll have to do it after the big match in the sky. Doubly devastating is that I found out today that another legend of rugby passed away in an accident yesterday. Carl Maresca was a legend of New York rugby - an uncompromising prop forward and then referee who lived for the game, and was very generous with his time. His passing won't have the broad scale impact that JC's will on the rugby world, but it's important to recognize Carl and his contributions nonetheless. So to both you big fellas, Vale.
