French international receives prison sentence for attack on wife

Serial offender Mohamed Haouas has copped a one year prison sentence for hitting his wife. The assault happened in the public shopping centre where she worked.

The former French international has been continuously in the news for all the wrong reasons throughout his career, with misdemeanours taking place both on and off the rugby pitch.

Already in trouble with the law, the 127kg prop had previously been charged with an 18-month suspended sentence for armed robbery.

This aggression has been seen multiple times in front of huge audiences, as he often allows himself to venture out of the norms of rugby and into the realms of  the UFC. These occasions are often marked notably using his fists - much to his own teams peril. Twice he has seen red against Scotland after first punching Jamie Richie in the 2020 Six Nations, and then head butting Ben White in this years competition.

In this occasion it was his partner who felt the full force of Haouas’ anger. After seeing his wife smoking at work, having been told that she had given up, Haouas let his anger control him.

With his wife and two children in session, he told the French court: “She has the right to smoke… but the problem is that she lied to me… and I said to myself that if she can lie about the cigarette, she could lie about other things,

“I was imagining things. Married men cheat on their wives, I love her, so I was afraid.

“I became emotional and I really regret it… that’s my wife, I love her, I love her.”

Despite the verdict, his wife has confirmed that she wishes to remain with her husband to resolve his anger issues.

He will remain a free man while he launches an appeal, or he could wear an electronic tag, read an AFP report.
