When the biggest guy on the other team makes a clean break and you've got one defender left to take him down, you want it to be your best tackler. On this occasion, that wasn't the case.

Terrible attempt. He closed the space too much, then backed down.
Admittedly, I probably wouldn't go for this guy head on either. A big front facing BOSH isn't a viable tactic unless you are built like a brick sh*thouse. It is somewhat understandable at that level. It is why they are playing at that level rather than on TV. If you don't stand a chance of winning the collision head-on... open the space earlier, give them a yard, and take them at an angle from the side. Go for the ball, or a limb. Like a lioness hunting a Buffalo.
Tackling drills in the 5m channels 10m apart don't prepare you for someone with a 40m run up.
Just like judo, there are hundreds of ways and variations to bring someone down legally in rugby. Poor technique either ends like this, or 8 weeks off work in a neck brace. -
