George North and Richard Hibbard huge hits in lead up to Israel Folau try

Wales put up a good fight but went down 30-26 to the Wallabies in Cardiff earlier today in one of the best games of the season. The contest featured some incredibly physical confrontations and collisions from both sides. Here's a look at the two biggest hits.

We'll get longer highlights posted tomorrow but for now here is a look at the Israel Folau try that featured two huge hits, one big bump and a bit of afters too.

First George North, who was on top form for Wales again, came in and blindsided Adam Ashley-Cooper with a smashing tackle, then seconds later it was hard working hooker Richard Hibbard that did the same to Wallaby skipper Ben Mowen just meters from the tryline.

Australia stayed on task and despite the 'offensive defence' from Wales, fullback Folau bumped off aggressive as always Mike Phillips to score a very well taken try.

For fans of the sport, that passage of play had so much to enjoy, and while the push and shove afterwards wasn't great, it was good to see the intensity that both sides brought to the contest.

What did you think of the match, and these hits? As mentioned, more highlights from this game as well as the Dubai 7's, Barbarians match and more, will be posted soon.

Heard reports that Cooper gave him a nibble on the calf for that, hard to see if it actually happened but really looks that way.

I'll show this video to the kids I coach on how to make a proper impact tackle in the case of North and Hibbards and then how not too with Phillips. In fairness to the whiny though large 9, neither Hibbard nor North were tackling as dynamic of a player. That being said, they both lined up their targets from the side, got their feet close to the ball carrier and hit then with great body position. Phillips on the other hand, had terrible body position and got a head clash and got knocked down.

Hahaha. I should've explained that. Crabbing as in shuttling sideways across the pitch before making a pass. Danny Care was infamous for it for a while, but appears to not do it so much now.

They need to have him on every 6N game. Brian Moore can sit in the corner and fume. In fact, Brian Moore should be an alternative commentary setting, entitled 'Misery'.

We get to choose? When did I miss that? Last time I go to a rock pool without protection I was infested for weeks.

It's a good option to have in the weaponry, but from my observation 9 times out of 10 crabbing scrumhalves just waste valuable time and space.

Say what you like about Justin Marshall, I fucking love the way he describes these tackles on the replay at the end. "BOOFAAH!!" a particular highlight and a word I'll be making more use of from now on.

That tackle by Hibbard was fantastic. Mowen's a big boy, and he met him at speed, head on. There's no place to hide in a hit like that.

It'sanother tactic, keeps the guards occupied & guessing....the dummy & cut option is available & actually buys time for outside backs ......... fly halfs should align deeper & exploit the extra space created....so no, you're not correct IMO.

    No ! ..... Mr Knockon

    10.2 Unfair play

A penalty try must be awarded if the offence prevents a try that would probably otherwise have been scored.

'Probably otherwise ' is a lower test than "in no doubt"

If you're going to quote...... quote accurately kind sir.

I don't agree that George North had a great game.......... Yes no doubt going forward he is impressive, but how many times does he get drawn in ....ie not trusting his inside teammate to make their tackle ..... Australia ran around him a number of times ..... three try's cost? to my reckoning - Yes !

"Crabs"; Meaning he carries the ball before passing? Which i agree with, Care does it, it screws up your attack because the defence is up before the 10 even gets the ball.

    Crabs?

Am I the only one who thinks Phillips is HUGELY overrated? His delivery is slow, he often crabs (in a way that many English scrum-halfs have been rightly criticised for), he seems to dawdle and spend more time whining at the ref than getting the ball away, gets wound up way too easily, tries to run way too often thinking because he's big he'll barrell through, gets stuck in rucks, and lashes out petulantly way too often.

I would be furious if he was an England player and England kept picking him - I know Gatland has his favourites and sticks by them (even on Lions tours), but recently Wales have been better with other scrumhalves on the park. Much like how Lee Dickson has been good for England lately because he does the basics well and keeps it simple, I think Wales need someone just to get the ball away quickly. Phillips is too hung up on his own hype.

cocky welsh got brought back down to earth by the ozzies......

Man, Phillips is such scum. Any word on possible forthcoming citations?

Phillips completely lost it during the game and was focussing more on being physical than actually playing as a 9, the Welsh game sped up much more when Rhodri Williams came on. Really hope Phillips can control himself for the 6n else I would rather have Lloyd or Rhodri Williams starting, even Richie Rees if you are looking for short term cover.

If one refereeing decision goes against Wales, and they lose by less than a try, Gatland will complain. See: non-yellow card against Carter v Wales 2009/10, and RWC semi

Why doesn't rugbydump ever post videos of Ashton tackling like this?

Why? With the new rules barnes sees everything the 4th official does and is the no:1 match official on tge say, his call to make. Thats gonna start happening a lot more. In regards to the pass, stupid hands going vackwards part of the rule.... marginal hard call, benifit to the attacking team.

Gatland needs to get a grip.

There's no need to smear a great victory for the aussies.

Marshall was great in the commentary box again, hope he makes an appearance for the six nations.
The way Barnes made the call for the Aussie try instead of listening to the TMO was bullshit.

Take north out of this welsh team and they become a distinctly average side. I don't know how they managed to stay in the game. Australia were by far the better side

  • 4:03 AM 01/12/2013

Agreed on all counts. Wales didn't trust themselves like the all blacks did last week.

FOOKING awesome game though. Enjoyed as much as Ireland nz

  • 4:00 AM 01/12/2013

I'm sick of Phillips he seems more interested in street fights than rugby.

  • 3:59 AM 01/12/2013

Because a try was never on. Crap call, penalty at most

Forgot to say congratulations to Australia, really enjoyed the scenes at the end, trading shirts, chatting, QC's interview, it all just looked like how rugby should be!

Sadly I only saw the last 10 mins of this game, but the replays of QC's passing, running etc was brilliant! He is an awesome player to watch, seems like he really has got his head sorted (as others said in the past it was surprising he wasn't one of the lads that went out drinking and got banned!).

As for Phillips, I love his tenacity and aggressiveness, but sometimes I just wish he'd play the fooking game... this video is almost testament, he gets bumped then somehow he's having a fight at the end... perhaps it's not as easy to draw as straight a connection as he was fighting due to being embarrassed, but it seems that way.

The final moment of play of the game (not this video), why kick???? I was so shocked, I get that they were trying to be clever, but I'm sure Cuthbert (had he not stepped out) needed to beat at least 2 more players ?!?!

If Quade Cooper got sin binned for preventing a try scoring opportunity as the ref deemed it..then why wasn't North's try awarded as a penalty try that would have seen the Welsh win it!
