Georgian flanker Beka Gorgadze sets up try chance with almighty fend against Italy

In a match that some thought might have wider European implications, Italy saw off a spirited Georgia side 28-17 in Florence over the weekend. Italy had to work hard to quiet voices bent on their demotion from the Six Nations in favour of Georgia.

Despite the loss, Georgia proved they are no slouches, as Beka Gorgadze showed with his tremendous fend off of Italian winger Mattia Bellini.

It was a play that another similarly named number 8 would have appreciated. Unfortunately, Mamuka "Gorgodzilla" Gorgodze was not there to witness it.

With 10 minutes remaining, Georgia attempted a kick ahead into the corner but was collected and returned by Italy. With the ball heading out of play, Gorgadze showed some nice skill to collect the ball and then flatten Bellini with an impressive fend-off.

Georgia capitalised immediately and looked like they had a certain try on offer before bailing Italy out with a handling error from replacement scrum half Gela Aprasidza. Georgia didn't threaten again. With the win, Italy can take comfort from the fact that this particular Six Nations debate will be over, for now.

Great piece of play by that number 8! Maybe Georgia is still not quite there yet to beat Italy, but I hope they keep getting more fixtures against really good opposition, which is what I think they need to keep improving.
