Huge amateur hit from club rugby in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Over the course of the last two weeks there have been loads of emails and tweets sent in saying that this big tackle from Argentina should be posted on RD. While amateur clips being featured here isn't the norm, this one is pretty good.

It comes from Buenos Aires and a game between San Isidro Rugby Club (S.I.C), and Club Atletico San Isidro (C.A.S.I), in what I'm told is one of the most important games in the league.

What is clear is that it was one helluva tackle, and despite some of the players looking as though they thought it was a bit early or without the ball, it seemed to be timed perfectly as the hit was made as the hapless victim caught it.

Since posting this earlier, I've been told that the guy who made the tackle is named Carlos 'Charly' Roldan, a flank from SIC, and it's on flyhalf Fedrico Thomann. Roldan is fairly well known in those parts as he's played Argentina u20's with players such as Gonzalo Tiesi & Juan Manuel Leguizamon.

In the next few months we might look into opening things up towards accepting more amateur clip submission here on RD. It's something we've toyed with for years now actually, and it will no doubt prove quite popular, even if its just random posts once or twice a month.

For now though, there has just had been another good weekend of rugby in the northern hemisphere, so please feel free to share requests about stuff you saw or heard about that you'd like to be featured. You can do so via the forum or with the contact page.

In other news, seeing as this clip is from Argentina, it was earlier announced that next years expanded Tri Nations tournament - that will include New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and newcomers Argentina - has now been named. It will be called The Rugby Championship.

The draw will be announced later today, but for now we know the name, and that all sides will play each other home and away, for a total of six Test matches. More to follow.

I completely disagree with Rodofle; can you play that Lana Del Rey track "video games" that they played at the end of coverage for the H Cup weekend on UK TV though? Seriously, brought a tear to my eye. HD does have a place in rugby but so does some kid in Argentina with an iphone in the stand who manages to capture one of the sweetest hits I've witnessed in a quarter of a century playing this game. Nice post RD. Charly says HD's over-rated.

This is one of the most perfectly timed hits I've seen in 25 years playing and watching rugby.

nope, just saying that the professional camera work is usually there for the main event, not the undercard

Pretty sure "Flank" is a position in the forwards....

UN-believable hit. I dream of being in a situation with such a perfect set up like that. The victim utterly unaware of the guy closing in on him and receiving the ball at the exact right moment. So yes of course the tackler's tekkers are outstanding... but he was certainly fortunate in the perfect storm that was that situation. Be honest - he was already committed to the savage attack from about 15 metres away!

Also I agree with the tournament name. How utterly undescriptive and unimaginative. The World Cup is already really the Rugby Championship. Quad Nations for me. Or something along the lines of The Southern Hemisphere Cup/Championship/Tournament/ etc.

fantastic hit! brutal, regular, provocating a knock-on
as it is coming from an amateur club, i think few "pro" players should watch and learn.
isn't it mr warburton, mr estebanez or mr lawes?

Is he the left winger? if so a big unit, same size as the second rower on his team

    Massive hit

Do you mean like this left winger marking his opposite number's card and smashing him at the next available opportunity?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEgMXm33wAI

Get your point about the tactical decision, however if the ref had let play continue (which he should have), the ball was coughed up and his teammate had a clear run in for the try.

My theory is he was probably bored on his wing andsimply wanted to get involved in the game!

    Bosh.

Wonder why his teammate was not allowed to sprint through and score.

My thinking too M.M. I know nothing about these players but it looks to me as if the tackler lined up his prey from a long way back and was making a point of some sort. The response of some players suggests that there might also have been a bit of business, verbal or otherwise, immediately after the tackle. So maybe there's a back-story here.

What I don't understand is if the tackler is the left winger, then what he did doesn't make any sens tactically speaking.
They were in their 22m, so the winger should either go back in its field to anticipate a kick, or get in line with their teammates to defend the counterattack, if he thought there would have one.

To me, it looks like there was something pending between both players, and he just see the opportunity coming.
Whatever, it is just a lovely tackle, but knowing and playing with some Argentinos (boludo!) I wouldn't be surprise if it was a punishing tackle.

To add to what the others were saying....

SIC v CASI is as big as rugby rivalries get in Argentina.
The sports broadcasters (ESPN Sur, TyC, etc.) were surely on hand to televise the "primera" (First XV) match.

From what others are saying, this match was the Pre-Intermedia (Third XV) or Intermedia (Second XV), so it's in effect a curtain raiser.

So to all the haters of the video, the fact the camera work wasn't up to snuff is no surprise -- this is probably video from the coaching staff.

Most broadcast crews don't show up at a Super Rugby stadium at 9am, and start videotape of the U-15 curtainraiser.

So, why don't you do us all a favor and upload the clips to youtube. Then you can create a thread in the Request forum and maybe we'll all get to see it. Obviously, this clip was requested by many (you read the write-up, right?), so lo and behold it's on the front page.
And I'm not being sardonic. I really haven't watched much of this year's Aviva Premiership, so if there's something extraordinary that happened, and you caught it, go ahead and contribute. It'd be appreciated, I'm sure.

    How about the Quad Nations?

Disappointing to see some members of the other team square up to the tackler. If it had been high, early, late, no arms etc, sure, but not when it's just a great, hard tackle.

It already has one. You can hear the hit on the replay. Awesome!

  • 8:39 PM 07/11/2011

That was amazing. I was expecting a big hit, but not that! Awesome stuff. I've watched it about a dozen times now, and it just keeps getting better. Perfect timing, posture, technique - that's one hell of a good tackle.

As for the SH tournament: ...next years expanded Tri Nations tournament...will be called The Rugby Championship.

Yeah, and Lansdowne is "Aviva Stadium". This is just the Four Nations tournament, despite whatever supercilious official name it may have.

Great tackle but nothing other worldly and the poor video footage is a disappointment. Not really sure it justifies being posted tbh, because hits like that happen all the time. RD could end up flooded with poorly filmed big tackles if that's considered worthy enough.

Would rather see some of the fights and big hits from the Aviva Prem and Top 14 these last few weeks

At the end of the clip you can see the player getting up with a spring though. Good for him.

This is a match from the top division of arengitean rugby (even the best is amateur). SIC v Casi is one of the biggest fixtures as it's the San Isidro neighborhood classic, held in Buenos Aires. It's something like Racin Metro v Stade Francias in Paris.

The attendances for the knockout stages of the URBA top 14 (the competition's name) is good, as it's more familiar and friendly, given the amateur spirit. Several of the Argentina U20's team play in these clubs, and many more who now played in Europe started playing rugby here. Now with the PLADAR (High Perfromance Programme) the best players in Argentina are starting to develop into Test players and a couple of the PUmas players at RWC 2011 were playing here (like Imhoff, Farias, Senatore..)

    Beautiful hard perfectly legal tackle!
It's probably relatively high amateur level, seeing the surrounding of the pitch.
