Huge Hit From Peter Kimlin Leaves Leigh Halfpenny with more injury woe

Grenoble welcomed the current European Champions, Toulon, to the Stade des Alpes for a Top 14 clash this past weekend. This big tackle that Australian flanker Peter Kimlin put on Leigh Halfpenny was far from welcoming however.

Since arriving at the French giants the Welsh fullback has suffered continually with injury troubles, but was starting to look like he was on a solid road to recovery.

A concussion against Italy in the final game of the Six Nations however meant it was back to the sidelines for the metronomic kicker. Having spent his time recovering, an air of excitement encapsulated the return of the Welsh wizard.

Grenoble back rower Kimlin, was not in a sympathetic mood however.

The visitors' openside, Mamuka Gorgodze, lumbered inside his man before lofting an unconventional and somewhat dooming pass to the waiting Halfpenny, which meant he had to stop his run to catch the ball.

After Halfpenny gathered in possession whilst flatfooted, an approaching Kimlin saw his opportunity to put a mammoth shoulder into the stationary target - and he did not miss.

The powerful hit actually caused a minor dislocation in Halfpenny's shoulder, and although bravely continuing to play for 10 minutes, the pain eventually forced him from the field.

The visitors proved too strong for Grenoble on the night, with the final score 23-35 to Toulon.

Initial reports say that Halfpenny is unlikely to play next week in their European Champions Cup semi-final against Leinster, and although Toulon are more than capable of filling the fullback role, the creative play and reliable kicking of the Welsh talisman are sure to be missed.

EXTRA: This came shortly after tank Mathieau Bastereaud had easily dismissed the attempted tackle of Grenoble number 8, Rory Grice. That contest can be seen on page 2.

Forwards throwing hospital passes to outside backs.

Not everything about "the modern game" is good.

I found the topic very interesting. I myself wear a head guard as it does provide some cushioning from head on head collisions (or head on anything else), but that is more down the route of 'splits and cuts and general bangs' rather than anything inside my head. But mainly it's due to protecting against the old Cauli's! However when I'm playing flanker, I prefer to play without the scrum cap, as I find it's more restrictive to hearing etc...

As far as being reckless - I can't really say whether it changes my style (personally). I remember when I was at school and a lot smaller I discovered shoulder pads which gave me more confidence - so there is definitely a psychological aspect of padding.

1/2p is certainly a worry from a neutral spectators point of view - I don't see him lasting long if he continues to end up on the short end..

Thanks, Stroudos. This reminds me of an interview with French winger Vincent Clerc, where he explained that when he was wearing his headgear at the beginning of his career, he was running at every player with no regard to size or weigh because he was over-confident that the head guard would protect him. He got head gear at his beginnings in Toulouse because the year before he got an head injury needing some 10 stitches.
So i'm also afraid that players with head guards might be over-confident about escaping concussions today.

Good news from the WRU medical department though - looks like they're treating North and Halfpenny's experiences as something of a wake-up call.

No medical expert myself, but instinctively I agree with the point on head guards encouraging more reckless behaviour by the wearer. Same seen in boxing and even to some extent with cycling (leisure/commuting).

At this rate he'll be lucky if he can count to 30.

I don't think Halfpenny will be playing rugby at 30.

Halfpenny and North could benefit from some well earned rest before the start of this World Cup - especially if they want to be as effective and important to the Welsh efforts as they deserve to be.

Ouch. Hospital pass from Gorgodze there.

Possibly a blessing in disguise - don't think I'm alone in feeling that Halfpenny could do with a bit more time resting his noggin...

That "don't argue" by Bastareaud is an absolute beauty! Note to all would-be tacklers: do not go high on The Bastard.
