Huge tackle on Wisconsin Rugby Club player after inside switch

We received this clip from the guy who got 'lit up', as he called it. His name is Alex Peasley of Wisconsin Rugby Club, and Alex likes switching inside off his flyhalf. Unfortunately for him, Metropolis D2 have a player named Kavika Peniata, and he reads play well. And hits really hard.

The match took place at the Wisconsin Rugby Sports Complex in Madison on Saturday, and will be a memorable one for Alex, who came on as a replacement only to be drilled by Peniata. He clearly felt it, but he was kind enough to submit the clip for our viewing pleasure anyway.

It's a huge, technically sound hit and as you can hear, the crowd enjoyed every bit of it.

    Not sure what position the tackler played, but as an ex-open-sider, few things made my day more than a telegraphed switch from a scrum set-piece. You're bolting off the side, fly-half is first prize, but if he starts drifting and 12 starts crabbing towards you, it's such easy line defensive line to pick and you don't have to break stride.

    What we called back in the day, a Question Mark tackle. Because that's the shape the tackled player's body takes.

    Good lad for getting back, pity he couldn't pretend it didn't hurt!

    This is why teams need to play rugby. It is the same as Boxing. You can have all the skill, power and style of a World Champ, but the bag doesn't punch back. A 10 minute scrap will teach you more about yourself and the way things work than 10,000 hours on the bag.

    As we just saw, an inside switch is one of the easiest plays to telegraph on a rugby pitch, it seems the 10 decided the play before he even took the ball, giving the defenders time to set.

    I know our Amateur playbook was very thin... we were much more successful if we played heads up Fiji style rather than learn in the classroom, it was much more exciting than the 'synchronised ballet' playbook sessions

    Bosh. Love that and fair play to the bloke for volunteering the footage!

    Not sure about the "great read" though - he'd have been licking his lips in anticipation the switch was so well telegraphed, (yes I know it's amateur rugby, but still).

    Great read and then hit by Metropolis Player. Looks to me that this was a blind pass to the inside center and Alex ran straight into a tackle by a man bigger than him and moving. Rather than blame the flyhalf I'd question if this is exactly how they practiced the play. If our back movement is going to be better in this country we can't run set plays that don't allow for situational reads.
