Hurricanes and British & Irish Lions play out thrilling draw in Wellington

The Hurricanes fought back twice to draw 31-31 with the British and Irish Lions in a thrilling game of tour rugby earlier today. The Lions had led 23-7 at halftime before the hosts came back into the contest, thanks in part to a yellow card to impressive second rower Ian Henderson.

The Irishman was yellow carded for a dangerous lifting challenge with fifteen minutes left in the game, and the scoreline set at 31-17 to the Lions.

"It was a penalty to us, which ends up being a penalty reversed and a yellow card; that's the game really. Okay, we've ended up drawing, but it's disappointing because we were in such control of it," Lions coach Warren Gatland said post match.

"We went from the period of having 68 per cent territory and possession to about 25 per cent, so it was a massive swing in the game and disappointing we ended up with the yellow card.

"Particularly with the [fact] he referee had looked at it, he thought it was a penalty and he was asked to look at some different angles [on the big screen] and eventually made the decision to give it as a yellow card."

It ultimately proved costly, as the hosts stormed back into contention and then had a player penalised themselves close to the tryline, giving the Lions another crack at it.

Dan Biggar showed courage after being peppered with bruising runs by powerful centre Ngani Laumape all night, and after a brilliant rip and steal at the death, he had a shot at the dropgoal for the win on fulltime.

The Lions forwards showed their power up front, but flanker James Haskell said afterwards that they were disappointed at letting a team of that quality back in the match.

"We should have won today. For a lot of us it's the last time we'll pull on that red shirt, for myself personally.. All the boys left nothing out there and that's all you can ask," he said.

I can't believe Teo has been left out of the starting XV for Saturday. IMHO Gatland is rolling the dice big time on the effectiveness of the Farrell Sexton combination.

yep, you are right there. Although its probably too late to call anyone up if there are 1/2 injuries, if there are 2 or 3 injuries in any specific position he will need to bypass these players.

Also, is it not worth mentioning how 'lucky' Gatland has been with injuries in some ways. Obviously Billy V and Hogg were first choice players (and imo, Billy V would have made a massive massive difference last week), but other than those two, there hasn't been an injury to any nailed on starters or possible starters. Only Moriarty had a reasonable shout of a test match 23 place.

Youngs is also a loss, as he would have been playing in front of Laidlaw and it would have been 50/50 between him and webb for the bench.

His reasoning for the 'geographicals' was sound, but that is perhaps where he has a little less kiwi in him...

NZ have 'A' players in a squad, they also have a large number of 'A' players that they can call up to their squad, meaning their team may not be 'first choice' completely, but their depth means they have borderline full strength. Lions seem to have skipped the 'A' players to call up, and perhaps gone right through to idk, C players or something... But why?!? If in training they get 4 torn backsides and a couple broken legs, what will he do? All of a sudden he'll have to bypass the new call ups, to call up some genuine stand ins....

Gatland made a mistake in calling up players for geographical reasons. Not the worst mistake ever made though and its probably only really cost a win in this game.

If Gatland had just called up Launchbury when Moriarty got injured then he would have saved himself a lot of hassle. There would have been no question as to whether Launchbury deserved to be there. He would have been perfect for this game. He would also have appeased a lot of the press and supporters. If he had also given himself 1 more back rower (Robshaw, any of the Scots possibly) then he would have had the bench to close it out.

Saying that, one thing about the 'Geographicals' was that there hasn't really be injuries for players to be called up for. So those guys were just for training and to keep a couple of the weekend players off the bench. So I don't thinkhe got the balance of the squad in terms of backs/forwards quite right.

Got to say, I feel somewhat sorry for Gatland when I take into account the media parasites..

I don't know how I feel, I've been critical of his initial selections, critical of his call ups, but now, it makes me think it must be a bloody hard job and media drawing clowns etc are a bit pathetic.

I am however very concerned about how influenced he's been regarding his selections...Either it's water off a duck's back and he doesn't care about influences and he plays whoever he wants, or he does care... I mean there are probably plenty 'brits' out in NZ that could have squeezed into a lions shirt and sat on the bench without causing a detriment to the international teams in the vicinity all for the sake of being bums on sub seats...

Poite's obstruction on Laidlow for the first Hurricanes try was possibly the most incompetent piece of refereeing I've ever seen.

Anyway, how disastrous has Gatland revealed himself to be as coach?
