Ireland cruise to comfortable RWC warmup win over Wales in Cardiff

Ireland claimed a psychological advantage in the first of two Rugby World Cup warm up games against Wales as they won comfortably at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday. The 35-21 victory came after a convincing 25-7 lead at the break.

Ten minutes from fulltime Ireland actually led 35-7, so this was a bit of a drubbing in that sense, despite Wales coming back and later scoring a try on full time to flatter the scoreline.

Wales have just returned from an arduous training camp, but signs of that hard work weren't evident as Ireland blitzed their way to an early lead in the first half.

It was an experimental side, as was Ireland's, and New Zealand born Gareth Anscombe made his debut in the second half, while flanker Justin Tipuric showed a number of quality touches.Scott Williams said post match that he was pleased with how the game finished.

"Ireland had a lot of experience and that showed in the end. I was happy with the way we finished the game. It is the first time we have played together as a team and it was a big occasion."

Wales play hosts England, Australia, Fiji and Uruguay in Pool A at the World Cup, which starts on September 18, while Ireland are in Pool D alongside France, Italy, Canada and Romania.

These two sides meet again for a return match in Dublin on Auguest 29th.

Knock-on at 2:40 by Reddin at the base of the ruck in the lead-up to Zebo's try, not that it made much difference to the result...

Apparently it's some reference to gold found in welsh mines.. It just looks terrible and I thought we might get a good jersey for a change.

Any idea where the gold has come from? Don't recall it ever being on the Welsh kit before..

Our kit is pretty shocking, yet again.

Much as I'd like to comment on the game, I spent the whole video shaking my head in disgust at those awful rucksack-straps on the Wales kit.

The Ireland-France will be something interesting to watch.
That said, both welsh and irish defences weren't really strongin this game

Yes that would take outside the overly massive guy box thinking for gatland. They actually compliment each other fairly similarly to the ozzies except they also have a great 8.

Bring back the ball playing 7!

The team selection and performances of the 2 teams just reaffirmed that Ireland have more strength in depth. Still, you wouldn't expect such an inconsistent defensive performance from Wales that included drift, gaping holes, & Hibbard doing a one man blitz.

Tipuric seems to be growing in-confidence for Wales. Interesting to see the Aussie's starting Pocock and Hopper against NZ - picking 2 opensides worked pretty well for Wales last time they did it, but for that to happen again, Warburton would have to start at 6, and you could never see Gatland doing that.

Dangerous play By Ireland to let Wales come back in slightly. Not sure if it was bad Ireland or good Wales.

    Sad about Tommy O'Donnell.

We were awful, Ireland were clinical. I know we used a young side but come on, at least play like you're fighting for a world cup place.
The gap in class between Tipuric & Faletau and the rest of our team was so obvious to see.
