Jean De Villiers injury might rule him out of Rugby World Cup 2015

Springbok captain Jean De Villiers is set to be out of rugby for at least eight months following the knee injury suffered during South Africa's 12-6 loss to Wales on Saturday. At this stage it looks unlikely that he'll be fit in time for the World Cup.

De Villiers twisted his knee under in a ruck 17 minutes into the second half in Cardiff. His cries of pain could be heard on the live feed, and just as commentator Jonathan Davies said that there won't be replays because of the ugly nature of the injury, one was shown.

The 33-year-old centre went in for the turnover, but was cleared out and as Toby Faletau attempted to twist and move him, the Welsh number eight's weight bent De Villiers' leg in the wrong direction.

He was actually well set but it's a prime example of the risks involved in going in for a turnover in that body position. His loss was massive for the Springboks on the day, as they usually finish well but sorely lacked his leadership in those final twenty minutes.

He will require surgery on the left knee, with all eyes on the Rugby World Cup next year. He dislocated his kneecap and reportedly tore his hamstring at the same time too, so it's going to be a long year of hard work ahead.

A statement on Monday afternoon said that the scans revealed significant ligament damage to the knee, so he will require a surgical reconstruction of the knee.

UPDATE 04/12/2014: De Villiers underwent a successful operation in Stellenbosch earlier today. He had a full reconstruction of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments of his left knee, with an artificial graft as well as a repair of the medial collateral ligament.

"The procedure went well, but at this stage it is difficult to determine an exact return to play time-frame," said team doctor Craig Roberts. "The use of an artificial graft should speed up his rehabilitation and hopefully increase his chances of making a successful return to the playing field."

De Villiers said: "I would like to thank every medical practitioner involved in my injury, from Saturday when it happened until today’s operation.

"My focus will now be on the arrival of our third child in the coming days. Thereafter it will be about recovering as soon as possible so I can start with my rehabilitation. I still have my sights set on going to next year’s Rugby World Cup and will do everything in my power to get to England.

"I would also like to thank everyone for the well-wishes and support in the last week, it means a lot to me and my family and we really appreciate every message."

I think it is important to see the vids of people being injured, it gives people an appreciation of what these players go through for our entertainment. And as said gives people a chance to show their respect. In this case mine is infinite for JdV such a great player.

ACL injurys, while painful are quite straightforward to come back from but these multi ligament ones really do take it out of you. Somebody mentioned the NFL player earlier, I follow the NFL and while he is back from surgery he is a shadow of the player. I hope I am wrong but I think this one might be too much for JDV.

Having had a torn ACL on the left, then after returning well from that, doing ACL, LCL, torn Calf and Post-Lateral Corner tears these videos make me cringe though. Such agony usually from something so innocuo us

Amen. If JDV is screaming, you know it fucking hurts.

Agreed, the man is a legend and the World Cup will be poorer without him. I've always had massive respect for him as a player, a captain and a man and it will be a huge shame if he doesn't make it to the World Cup.

I believe there are 2 things from this video:

    1) It highlights a world renowned player has been injured (or any player for that matter) and provides people with a medium in which to send well wishes. (Perhaps JDV will read this site, perhaps friends of his will and will pass on the message, or perhaps neither, but it allows people to publicly show their support, which is a good thing as a community).

    2) It highlights the dangers of rugby, which everyone should have some awareness of, of course play with no fear, but also respect the fact that if this happens to you then you knew the risks and you aren't going on lead a crusade against this 'oh so dangerous game'.

I didn't even watch the clip, can't stand to watch this kind of footage. Nevertheless I do appreciate RD posting this because it gives our kind of people the opportunity to exchange experiences and wish JdV well.

So to me these kind of videos do serve a good purpose. Although I am never going to watch it myself and I do understand your point of view.

Wonderful moment that was. I decided when I saw that the first time that Jean De Villiers was the coolest man in the world.

Physics taught me a lot about life. From Internal Combustion to limb locomotion. One of the base rules is that for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction. For every law of physics Fiji break, there is a season ending clatterer. Absolutely horrific injury to see, but to be honest, the size and speed of players nowadays, I am surprised this isn't much more regular. Knees are only supposed to bend forwards and backwards, not completely sideways. A one in a million angle to fall awkwardly to do what he did, and after a million or so contacts over the years, his number rang.

I feel bad for JDV, a true hero of the green and gold, and I second the comment above on "stop playing this video". The scream alone is bad enough without seeing the knee, you could see every player around him react in shock.

Was it David Wallace who had something similar, only less severe, at the hands of Manu Tuilagi a few years ago?

I hate to see injuries shown in rugby. They are a fact of the game, but innocuous contacts ending up in injuries like this do nothing for the sport but put people off playing. He is a lucky man though, Rugby Medical staff are up there at the very top with NFL and NASA, he will make the world cup.

Your comment on never hearing about such an injury before got me wondering... and here's a thing, sounds like an American football player suffered a very similar injury last year:

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp13/story/_/id/9578937/dustin-keller-miami-dolphins-season

The good news, he appears to have made a full recovery. The recovery however took around 8 months. I know De Villiers will be getting excellent medical care, but if there's anything to learn from this other injury and rehab, let's hope it can be applied here.

The update doesn't sound too encouraging to me. That's major knee operation, and PCL (as opposed to the ACL and MCL) injuries are notoriously difficult to fix.

Obviously hoping for the very best, but just a full recovery from this would be a huge achievement. He really is such damn good guy, the rugby gods were especially cruel this time.

I remember hearing one of the commentators saying something like 'It must be very serious, JDV is not some who complains for some trivial thing.' and this moment came back in my mind:

Almost beheaded, got up silently and smiling.

Was quite a nasty yell when I was watching the game...

Poor JDV never nice seeing any player get injured like that or injured full stop...

I was slightly amused by the commentary at the time that mentioned how 'its a bad injury so they won't show a replay'... Next clip was a replay of the injury....

Glad he got a lot of support as he was leaving, good sportsmanship from all teams/crowds.

Wondering when the weekends matches will be summed up on RD??...

With this match, I felt Wales were definitely more deserving, I just sort of wanted to see the boks win to hear what excuse Gatland would come out with next.. Have the Welsh found their new fly half? What a demon, he has to be first pick, pulling down charging props, second rows, heart on the line. Great game.

Tough to watch, always admired DeVilliers. Would be really sad if he's not there for the RWC, wishing him a full and speedy recovery.

Poor guy. Hope he makes it back on time, but I equally hope he's not rushed back so that he can play and then suffer for it later in life.

Ouch, I haven't heard a scream over the mic like that since Cipriani did his ankle in. Such a shame, a player I really admire all round. Wish him a speedy recovery and although it's unlikely, hopefully not miss out on the world cup.

The outlook is really bleak for Jean in terms of the world cup ("at least 8 months" out the game is the key phrase), and it's such terrible luck, again, for one of the best guys in the game.

No-one was more deserving of leading out a team at the world cup, and looks now that he probably won't. Some things just plain suck.
