French referee Jérôme Garcès has received a lot of criticism via social media for his performance during New Zealand’s 23-13 win over South Africa on Saturday.

This is the third World Cup that Garcès has officiated at and in his opening game of 2019 tournament, he has been criticised for his ruling at the breakdown.

The 45-year-old awarded 13 penalties throughout the 80 minutes in Yokohama, with around 75% of these going against the Springboks.

Dane Coles clear side entry vs a missed yellow card for professional foul. At the end of the day, I don't think one side was advantaged more than an other. There will be others polemics in this WC.

The scrum penalties were a joke, kiwis could knock on but the boks couldn’t knock backwards, forward pass missed in the first try. but the biggest issue was the breakdown. He’d coach the  boks to get hands out or release at every breakdown but was silent when nz contested. It’s almost as if nz were considered honest and the boks cheats at the breakdown.

He had a poor game all round, both sides were left frustrated. In the pub both sides were arguing more over the ref than whatever both teams did.

Yeah right. SA were constantly offside, a number of high shots in the tackle, elbows to the head at damn near every ruck, none of this was addressed by the referee. but yeah sure the ref was giving the ABs a free ride.

right, so 75% of penalties went against the boks but there were only 13 penalties so no free rides but a little one sided. Also elbows to the head, were you watching rigby or UFC? Then again, if Dane Coles joined from the ruck I'd maybe sneak one in.

Don’t have any allegiance to either side, but the teams were being referred to different standards. Could call it street smarts on the kiwi part, but it was one sided
