Joe Marler's yellow card vs Bath looks worse the more you watch it

England prop Joe Marler was sent to the sin bin on Saturday for an illegal tackle on Bath full back Tom de Glanville.

The 31-year-old went low into the challenge but failed to wrap his arms around de Glanville resulting in the young Bath player flipping over Marler’s shoulder and landing awkwardly on his head.

Quins centre André Esterhuizen simultaneously hit de Glanville which made the incident look worse for Marler and following a referral by the TMO, referee Luke Pearce sent the front rower to the bin.

Despite going down to 14 men for 10 minutes, Quins went on to win the game 31-17 at Twickenham Stoop and maintain the strong start to the season by the reigning champions.

The London side have now won four of their opening five games in the Premiership leaving them second behind Leicester Tigers, who are unbeaten through six games.

It’s great to get five points and for Bath to leave with nothing,” said Quins openside flanker Tom Lawday. “We said (at half time) we needed to get into shape faster in attack and slightly more physical and dominant in defence.”

Last weekend Bath were destroyed 17-71 by Saracens at The Rec which was one of their biggest defeats in history.

“We knew after their result last weekend that they were going to try and bounce back and that it would be a challenge, and while we probably didn’t get it right in the first half we came out on top which is great.”

Quins will next welcome Saracens at Twickenham Stoop on Sunday 31 October.

Marler has earned 72 caps for England since making his debut in 2012 and is widely regarded as one of the best loosehead props in the world, highlighted by his selection for the 2017 British & Irish Lions squad.
