Crusaders front rower Joe Moody was suspended after he was cited for this incident that led up to his try against the Waratahs in the first half of Saturday's Super Rugby clash in Christchurch. Moody pleaded guilty to the charge.

A SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee accepted a guilty plea from All Black Moody, after he was charged was contravening Law 9.12: Striking with hand or arm.

He appeared to bump Beale out of the way, landing his forearm on Beale's chin in the process.

It somehow wasn't picked up by officials on the field, or the TMO, and the New Zealand commentators seemed to ignore it, with only light reference made of the way he cleared his path towards the tryline.

Their Australian counterparts, however, were less forgiving, with former Wallaby Rod Kafer saying:

"That’s an elbow to the throat of a player unprotected. It’s a red-card offence. The try should not be scored. The guy should not be on the field."

Foul Play Review Committee Chairman Nigel Hampton QC ruled the following:

"With respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a mid-range entry point of 4 weeks due to the dangerous contact with the opposing Player's head.

"However, taking into account mitigating factors including the Player's excellent judicial record, good character and guilty plea at the earliest possible opportunity, the Foul Play Review Committee reduced the suspension to 2 weeks."

"The player is therefore suspended for 2 weeks, up to and including Friday 25 May 2018."

The Waratahs were leading 29-0 when Moody scored. The try sparked a historic comeback, as the Crusaders went on to win the match 31-29, making it the biggest comeback in Super Rugby history.

I'm surprised Hooper (Captain) didn't. But that said as much as I really, really dislike the Crusaders they'd probably still come back and win with a man down. They're that good. Absolutely fantastic first half from the Waratahs but I think everyone watching was thinking Canterbury would make a historic comeback, they always do.

Yeh that was BS, imo... Personally didn't see it as an offence at all and the ban was a huge joke..

Alesana for the knee on the Japanese player?

I agree with you regarding mitigating factors...it's not exactly like it's deniable...

Imo the only mitigating circumstances should be a players prior record and perhaps the surroundings of an incident.. if it was say a bad high shot that looked totally accidental and the offender immediately sought for medical help for the injured player or something.. even Haskell on Jamie Roberts rings a bell, I'd be inclined to take that sort of thing into account, but certainly not towards a 50% reduction!

I know things aren't always black and white, but sometimes I think entry level should be entry level...

agreed. Try should not have stood..........
Also IMO, 2 weeks suspension is a joke.
Every time I see this "mitigating factors" bullshit, I think back to Tuilagi receiving a 5 week ban at the World Cup.

even if it's not looked at specifically for the red card it should have been looked at for taking a defender out to create the gap - the ball carrier literally jumped over Beale's body!

How is it that none of the Tah's players asked the ref to give that one a quick check?

Biggest failure is beale/tahs captain for not bringing it to the refs attention.
