Julian Savea has now set himself as the undisputed greatest try-scorer of the Super Rugby era after notching down his 61st career try during Moana Pasifika's Friday night match against the Melbourne Rebels.
Having spent most of his career earning himself the nickname 'The Bus' on the wing for the Hurricanes and the All Blacks, Savea has since ventured inwards to the centres, choosing to rely on his ball-carrying talents rather than his out-and-out pace.
The extra score has taken his tally above that of star back three player Israel Folau who finished with 60 tries.
Savea has taken his time in reaching the milestone having hit second place on the leaderboard back in 2021. Speaking of the milestone at the time, Savea said: “I didn’t know I was nearby, I thought TJ was on 60 or something. I wasn’t going to score six tries tonight.
“It’s a small milestone for me. I’m happy about the team and I’ll celebrate those little things by myself. I’ll look back and be really proud, obviously the legendary names who are on that list."
TJ Perenara will be hot on his heels after recovering from injury and back in full fitness for the Hurricanes once again. Recently the talented scrum half announced his intentions to return to international rugby, saying:
"It's the pinnacle of the game in my eyes, playing for the All Blacks, and to get back there would be awesome.
"Obviously, my first focus now is to play well for the Hurricanes and to help us win a Super Rugby Championship but I would be lying if I said I wasn't aspiring to be an All Black."
