Julian Savea puts Lwazi Mvovo on his backside as Hurricanes snatch thriller

The Hurricanes snatched a dramatic last-ditch win in their Super Rugby clash with the Sharks on Friday, taking a 38-37 win thanks to a late converted try. Earlier in the match, winger Julian Savea got his hands on the ball and made Lwazi Mvovo pay for a poor tackle attempt.

Mvovo appeared to just want to get in Savea's way, which as we've seen on multiple occasions, just isn't good enough against the big man they call The Bus. 

The Sharks winger went flying, well and truly dealt with by the former All Blacks powerhouse.

The visitors had led 27-19 at halftime after each side has scored three tries apiece, but a late comeback from the Hurricanes, including a yellow card to the Sharks, allowed impressive centre Ngani Laumape to cross after multiple phases of attack, five minutes after the full-time siren.

Number ten Ihaia West, in for injured Beauden Barrett, then completed the job with the straightforward conversion, taking his side ahead and sealing a memorable win in Napier.

The visitors had looked the stronger side for large periods of the contest, but with momentum late in the game and a man advantage, the hosts managed to pick up their fifth successive win.

This was the Sharks' fourth loss from seven, but with a confidence boosting 63-40 win over the Blues last weekend, and six of their last nine matches based in Durban, they will take heart from the way they played.

    I hate those calls where the cleaner turns around and 'cleans' an opposing player right into the back of the ruck. That call sure helped the 'Canes in that last passage of play.

    Yeah Savea has dropped off a cliff somewhat and its easy to bag him now. The dude did score 46 tries in his first 50 tests, which is the best return for any international winger ever.

    Hahaha, Savea is a big guy no doubt, but I do grow weary of "The new XYZ's". Lomu is/was fantastic, however I think if he was in the middle of the modern game nowadays, he'd be a handful, but not as prolific as he was in his time. Plus there is also that less pleasant feeling that you get when you're trying to fill shoes, these guys have their own names, their own skills and their own styles - maybe drawing comparisons in the peaks, or the twilight of their careers is a little more fair than building potentially unfeasible expectations for a guy from the offset..

    Yeah I remember all that nonsense and hot air from Steve Hansen about him being as good, if not better, than Lomu. He waxes lyrical that Hansen, goes on about rugby players being "special people" and the special bonds they all have. Pffffft, b@llocks!

    I suppose given the AB depth it's no wonder he's out. I just remember him coming on the scene and being coined "the new lomu"..

    It feels like he's been out of the picture for an age now. I doubt he'll ever be back in a black jersey again.

    His last cap was against the B&I Lions. It doesn't matter what he has done, how many tries he scored or Northern Hemispherites he has bashed... it is about what he is currently doing... and it isn't enough to nail down a starting jersey.
