England prop Kyle Sinckler was missing from the opening match of England's World Cup campaign against Argentina, but at the time it was thought by many to be a tactical decision by Steve Borthwick.
The England head coach had been testing his squad with various different combinations ahead of the World Cup, so it was not a far-fetched theory to suggest that Sinckler, despite his obvious talents, had been overlooked in favour of the more experienced Dan Cole.
There appears now to have been more to the story. Kyle Sinckler has made a statement on his Instagram page suggesting an injury sustained 5 weeks ago had almost ruled him out of the World Cup.
His statement reads:
"Around 5 weeks ago I picked up an injury which potentially could have ruled me out of the World Cup. Which would have been devastating!
"As I write this post, I've managed to fully recover with the help of my team and the @englandrugby medical team and play in my second World Cup. I'm filled with an enormous amount of gratitude and appreciation.
"Never let something you care about almost be taken away from you, for you to appreciate it and realise how lucky you actually are.
"Thank you for all your support its been amazing so far.
"Everyone @englandrugby is doing everything within our power to make you guys proud back home.
"Looking forward to the next few weeks and how they unfold."
Following the Chile match, Sinckler said:
"The scan didn't look great but I knew it would be fine,
"For me there's a massive amount of appreciation and gratitude to be back out there because it was kind of touch and go.
"Fair play to the medical staff and Steve for trusting me and to say, 'I know my body, I am going to be fine'."
"For me, it is a massive amount of gratitude to be back out there, before the Fiji game, I pulled up with a pectoral tear, which was really touch and go.
"I have been on recovery 24/7 since that game so I am very grateful to be here, at my second World Cup, in my 13th year as a professional."
