Lolo Lui's huge tackle on James Stannard at the Glasgow Sevens

This weekend the London Sevens takes place at Twickenham after another fascinating round in Glasgow a week ago. Here is a quick look at a big tackle that took place in the Samoa vs Australia game, as Lolo Lui demolished James Stannard.

South Africa won the tournament after beating New Zealand in the final, while Samoa had a series leg that they would rather forget, losing to Canada, narrowly beating Russia and then losing the Bowl semi final to Australia.

In that game there was this stand out moment for the Samoans however, as Lui made a sensational hit, knocking the wind out of Stannard to the point that he had to leave the field.

Samoa are fourth in the standings going into the final leg of the world series, in London. While New Zealand have won this year's series, South Africa and Fiji will be gunning for second place.

Hosts England are in eighth place, but will no doubt be looking for a good showing in front of their home crowd. We'll have official highlights from the IRB as they happen throughout the weekend.

    @ Canadian content

I see no problem with the height of this tackle, nor the height of Kahui's, any higher on Kahui's and definitely trouble, but I don't believe "rugby" can introduce any more interpretive areas without causing more havoc, e.g. "yes it was not technically a high tackle, but it was getting CLOSE to a high tackle from my view so what we'll do is just sort of award a free kick or something..." ...get my drift...

I do totally agree with you on the "wrap" side of things, but again we have to be careful with wording. Kahui's tackle was by definition NOT illegal, the sort of pathetic swinging motion he made with one of his arms looks to be his way of "attempting to wrap" and that is all the laws ask for; "an attempt". However I can see how law changes etc have caused players to opt more for that Kahuiesque style over a traditional style because if you flatten the guy and you're still on your feet, then you can compete for the ball if he's on the ground. But as I said, to the letter of the law, what Kahui did was perfectly fine.

Perhaps it should be compulsory from now on to state your hemisphere when leaving a comment on RD, either NH for Northern Hemisphere, or SH for Southern Hemisphere, that way all the genii/geniuses who enjoy the NH v SH bullshit can get their facts straight.

Cracking tackle, strong, clean, legal, guys gonna have sore guts for a white. The end looked "odd" not sure if it was a way of roughing up the player or just an awkward hand/arm placing when trying to ruck, either way, not a big deal.

    NH!

    Talking about mainly kahuis

Not a punch, not even worth debating.

Fantastic hit, clean, wrapped up, totally proves that all of the other hits where the tackler supposedly "couldn't" wrap, we're in fact illegal.

Agreed. Slowed it down frame by frame and he seemed to have no idea where Stannard's head was. The inside of his forearm does touch the head, but it looks accidental.

Is that an attempted punch after the hit ? bit unnecessary when you've put in hit like that !

    What a hit!
