Los Pumas beat Springboks in Argentina for first time ever

Argentina kicked a 78th minute penalty to take the lead and edge out South Africa 26-24 in a tense Rugby Championship second round Test in Salta on Saturday evening. Following their first ever win over the Springboks last year, this was the first time they had ever beaten them at home.

Replacement flyhalf Santiago Gonzalez Iglesias kicked a late penalty to give Argentina their second win over the Springboks in 24 encounters, and their first at home.

"Argentina were very good while we made a lot of errors," said Springboks skipper and hooker Adriaan Strauss. "We need to take a long, hard look at ourselves and fix what has gone wrong before playing in Australia and New Zealand next month."

Despite South Africa missing some kicks at goal and having some opportunities they should have converted, the hosts played some excellent attacking rugby and were deserving of the famous win, especially as they had two key playmakers leave the field to injury in the second half.

The tournament goes to Twickenham Stadium for the first time on October 8, with Argentina v Australia.

Tickets to Argentina v Australia at Twickenham Stadium are available from £45 for adults, £25 for children (U16) and a family package (2 adults & 2 children) for £115. (Booking fees apply)

I am Argentinian and I don't completely agree with steve but some games it seems the mistakes are made far more against us. It's kind of dissapointing but I do Not think there is a conspiracy againt Argentina..maybe just bad luck.

I agree flacointheus. In the world of rugby that I know, people are delighted to see the growing strength of Argentine rugby, and as far as I can see, World Rugby is taking sensible steps intended to promote the game in Argentina, and promote Argentine rugby internationally. And it seems to be paying off as the Pumas' international record steadily improves. If steve is right that Argentine fans think the world doesn't want them to win, I can only say that I watch a lot of rugby, read a lot of analysis and comment and talk to people all the time, and I haven't noticed anything of the sort.

Steve, I believe that the Southafrican No.7 (I forget his name) tackled high a few times. But to state that "world rugby don't want to see us winning" is ridiculous. The Pumas have been incorporated into the RC, Argentina has one franchise in Super Rugby, Pampas XV played in the Southafrican Vodacom Cup for years, Agustin Pichot is an important World Rugby official, etc, etc. With all due respect, that conspiracy theory is nonsense. Refs are human beings and yes, they make mistakes. Let us enjoy this great Pumas team! Va con onda :) saludos

Argentina is improving and South Africa is declining. I think these trends will continue.

Bottom line:the powers in charge of the Springboks do not want the Springboks to be successful.

It's really too bad. For the sake of test rugby we need somebody to challenge the All Blacks. It doesn't look like SA or Aus will be threatening NZ this year.
