Luke Charteris and Pascal Pape shown yellow cards for Top 14 fight

Stade Francais beat Perpignan 34-24 at the Stade Charlety in Paris, claiming their second win of the year, and helping them move three points clear of the relegation threat. Near the end of the match a fight erupted, resulting in two yellow cards.

Visitors Perpignan scored a stunning long range try through Richard Haughton from a James Hook crosskick, before Hook kept them in the game with the boot. Former fullback Jerome Porical did the same for Stade Francais, while flyhalf Jules Plisson slotted two drop goals in a matter of minutes.

Big Sebastien Vahaamahina powered over in the corner for a lovely Perpignan try in the second half, but with fifteen minutes left in the game the scores were tied at 24-24 before Lei Tomiki scored the winning try, to add to another Porical penalty, his eigth kick from nine attempts.

Five minutes from time both sides lost players to the sinbin after a scuffle broke out on the back of a maul, which led to multiple punches being thrown. There were a few cheapshots, but locks Luke Charteris and Pascal Pape were the most prominent, so they were handed yellow cards.

If you watch carefully, Charteris wasn't even involved in the initial aggro, but soon got involved when Pape clearly took exception to the way he was yanked out of the maul.

At this stage it's not entirely clear, but it looks as though there will be a disciplinary hearing on the 10th October. We will confirm as soon as we know for sure.

We'll have more Top 14 highlights, including a weekend wrap-up, shortly

Lol, I quite enjoyed those hockey vids Dave...

@Guy. The whole point is that the guys DO stay on their feet, they try their best to remain standing as it gives them more time to land a killer punch... Perhaps they're brilliant and fighting... I mean that cut that guy had was pretty nasty, we rarely see cuts that bad in rugby, as a result of a punch anyway...

I do agree that throwing a punch is pointless really in rugby when compared to a crunching revenge hit....in theory at least.... sometimes a punch is the more preferable action...

I suppose though what Dave was saying and the theory behind it is that it gives players the opportunity to get it out their systems, get a 5 minute sit down time to cool off afterwards and then it SHOULD be all done and that should be the end of it...

Sorry Dave, I guess it's a matter of opinion. Personally I don't like these fights at all, it seems completely useless. After both landing about 50 punches they are both still on their feet. So much for fighting skills.

Personally I find a good hard, legal tackle that's got 'revenge' written all over it, much more appealing. I vaguely remember a Lewsey tackle on was it Matt Rogers? Broke him a pair of ribs with a perfectly legal piece of play.

I do agree on the Championship (post below). Pity we have about 300 channels over here, all of which don't broadcast rugby.

The slap around the head was by #18 I think, not Charteris, it's wasn't in any way diving, and Pape did not dive to the ground as a result of the slap, it was merely an act of petulance as you said, a way to rattle Pape's cage and perhaps further provoke him into continuing to fight. I don't watch an awful lot of it, but I am pretty sure I have seen similar things in UK rugby, they don't tend to be as physical, that slap was quite hard, it wasn't really a "well done" slap, it was more of a revenge sort of slap, but idk 100%... for me it borders into the same category as clapping when the referee calls over an opposition player, and I've seen plenty of players from all over the world (UK included) doing that...

For the record, perhaps next time you should provide links to these videos you have seen, you never know if the RD bunch have seen them or not, might be an interesting post...

Because we're all fags, we wear tutu's and despise any sort of painful contact, that is our sport, now you obviously don't fit in around here so feel free to disembark the RD pleasure ship and never return....

HAHAHA, Thats brilliant. See I enjoy the French attitude, admittedly I wouldn't want to be on the receiving of some of these French fists, so I can see the positives to trying to stamp it out, but it appears the French commentators, players and even the referee's tend to take a stance on it in a way that "if it doesn't appear to have hurt, then it isn't really worth much of an investigation"... lol.. And I honestly admire that...

I've never seen a fight in hockey.

If you mean ice hockey...well, maybe because they are not ice hockey players? Actually: why do ice hockey players fight? Shouldn't they be playing 'hockey' instead?

Thank's for the translation. I've got to update my knowledge of the French language. I am allready very fond of French commentary without even knowing what the hell they say.

Well French lower leagues have a strong reputation for brawls.
But in my case the worst I've ever done in terms of anger/agression on a field, is shove a guy out of a ruck from behind him (I was totally offside), just because on the race to the ball he had shoved me out of the way with an elbow and held me up a bit.
I personally can't imagine getting into a fight. But I know a few guys on the field who are dying for an opportunity :)
Once, a 10 shoved my face into the mud while he was getting up, because I had just hard-tackled him and made him bungle a 3 against 1 opportunity. I looked at him and smiled through muddy teeth (I hope it pissed him off even more).

Perpignan have a somewhat sour reputation, a lot of their regular players are always very keen on close-quarter talks about the weather (with their opponents).

It's a pity not all of you understand what the commentators are saying, because during the slow motion replay, one of them says "ahh, nice punch by Charteris, ohh and wonderful uppercut by Pape, it's one all so far on the scoreboard - aww!! and what was that? a hit by behind? that's just wrong!". Then the second commentator chips in and says "I think Charteris' punch wasn't so great after all, because (when I used to play) I knew a few Welsh forwards who would land a real punch from which you wouldn't get up".
The TOP 14 on French TV sometimes ressembles a boxing match with comments.

Excellent analysis. Red #18 - I don't know who he is either - was on a mission here wasn't he? He's the one pulling Pape out of the maul in the first place and look how quick he was to jump up and start throwing knuckles!

Good spot on him then walking all the way round the others to slap Pape on the head while he (Pape) and Charteris were busy exchanging their car insurance details.

Nah, quite the opposite I think mate. Seems to be quite the gentleman from what I've seen of him over the years. 2nd rows are always going to be involved in more argy-bargy than most. Even here, he only seems to be defending himself.

Lol, the French are just better at expressing their anger through fists than most other nations...

p.s To any French reading this, that is not supposed to be an insult, merely an observation. I love the French fights, they always made for great watching....

Top14 punch ups were generally some of the best rated punch ups. In fact Matfield said when he went to play in France he had to improve his "boxing skills"...

This is the kind of stuff I really miss from the French, sad to see it took a Welshman to spark it off..

Is it me or Pascal Pape seems to feature here regularly participating in these brawls? He's like the french's own little Bakkies haha

Can't help but notice that pretty much all the brawls posted here are from the top 14. Is that just random selection or do the French attitude and horrible French refs cause so much more fighting?

  • guy

    What the hell happened here?

    A top14 punch-up...WITHOUT anybody taking a dive?

Christmas comes early this year, it's a downright miracle.

  • pretzel

Still don't really see what actually caused it... Sort of saw Pape get thrown out of the maul and then it looked like Charteris sort of had hands on his face, either to break his fall, or to rough him up (not suggesting gouging btw) and then they both sort of got up and started going at it :/ it was just a bit odd...

I think yellows were appropriate though, I don't like the sound of disciplinary meetings for this kind of crap, yellows suffice....
