Mass Brawl between Perpignan and Carcassonne in French second division

Midway through the first half of Friday's Pro D2 second round match a little push and shove ensued between Perpignan and Carcassonne. It all looked fairly innocuous, but when something was said in close quarters, David Marty took things to another level.

The fight was reminiscent of the 'old days', as various little pods developed and just when it seemed to be cooling off, another player would throw a sneaky punch.

Once it did eventually die down, both Marty and Bastien Dupuy were red carded, and each side lost a player to the sinbin too. Perpignan won the match 38-9.

    Pro divisions (Top 14 and D2) are quite respectful on the pitch. The real problem is in amateur divisions (Federale) where brawls are numerous and often seen by the coaches as a legit strategy. For instance, your team will on purpose commit a knock-on to get a scrum, then a stealthy second row punch that may heat up in a front row brawl. There are a lot of rivalries.

    Don't worry, I was being a knob... As much as I love our resident French fans, I often find myself on the wrong end after mentioning Frances blemished D2 past... Did I say blemished? I mean battered and bruised with black eyes galore....

    Because apparently mentioning it in some way is demeaning. Plus depending on who you talk to, it never happened...

    I agree, it is offensive.

    In the "old days", there may have been one sneaky punch which started the whole barny, but after that, punches were above-board and visible to all, including the ref. No cheap shots ever. If you were going to lay a bloke out, you did him the courtesy of doing it in a fair fight.

    Except for scrumhalves. Those little bastards only knew how to fight dirty.

    Lighten up. Offensive? To talk about fighting in sport? It's not like they insulted your mother. Besides. I don't think they meant old days of french rugby, just rugby in general when punch ups were a lot more common.

    I'm sorry, but this is extremely offensive. France has NEVER had a history of foul play, especially no more than any other team. In fact, French D2 teams have probably had less punches thrown in it's entire history than chess has in the last chess world cup.
