Massive try saving hit by Israel's Yonatan Kaplan vs Gibraltar

On Saturday Gibraltar hosted Israel in what was only their third ever Test match, held at Victoria Stadium. The underdogs achieved an impressive 25-12 victory, but felt the might of the 49th ranked side in the first half with this thundering try saving tackle.

Israel, who play in division 2B of the European Nations Cup, were reportedly treating this as a warm-up game and clearly didn't expect Gibraltar to offer much resistance. The hosts played their first Test in 2011, and are currently battling for FIRA/AER (European Rugby Federation) recognition.

They surprised everyone with the win, and it'll go a long way towards building rugby in the region.

A packed stadium were on hand to witness the victory, and seemed to enjoy this huge tackle too, even if it was on one of their own players, centre Adrian Thomas.

Flyhalf Harvey Armstrong made a great break with a dummy and offload, putting Thomas through the gap as he broke the tackle. A try looked certain, but big number eight Yonatan Kaplan came out of nowhere to make a massive covering hit.

Thomas seemed to jump into it slightly, which no doubt made it more spectacular as he was flung onto his back and slammed to the turf, right in front of referee Julian Bevan of Wales.

Mr Bevan felt that the tackle was okay, and reportedly viewed Kaplan's tackle as having been legal due to an attempt to grasp the player with both arms (even if it did look like a clothesline).

To his credit, Thomas presented the ball nicely and his team continued to attack. The Gibraltar union have since told us that they have no complaints about the tackle.

View an animated gif of the tackle on page two of this post. Note: We realise the quality of both the image up top and the video is poor. If we get better we'll replace asap.

Above is an animated gif (looping graphic) of the tackle for your viewing pleasure. There's no sound on this but there's something about it that is a bit like a carcrash, in more ways than one.

Honestly think that it is pitiful seeing politics being brought into sport, especially the many negative allegations towards Gibraltar and its people. Being Gibraltarian myself, I am quite offended. I just hope that in future, people will come to respect each other more, regardless of where they come from. I thought rugby took pride in being an honorable sport, let us keep it like that.

Politics aside, I was in fact a ball boy at this match and was standing right behind the try line. A crunching tackle I have to say, yet, seemed legal to me.

Seeing many of the POSITIVE comments, I feel proud to play for Gibraltar and would love to one day play international rugby. Just hope everyone can see through all this mess surrounding Gibraltar and allow us to play in Europe in the near future.

Otto is so well educated that he doesn't even know the Spanish name for the Falklands! Gibratar voted and the British Government listened to what they wanted and basically told Spain to go tuck themselves! Spain handed over Gibraltar now shut up you thick ****!

    Otto,

    What is your problem mate?

We are here to discuss rugby.

I'm afraid your wrong again with your history but I'm not getting into that again its irrelevant.

However if you do have masters degree and work experience at the UN and live in Spain there is a very good chance your unemployed due to the corrupt mismanagement of your current government.

Good luck but I think your find the UK has made it very clear Gibraltar will only be Spanish when Gibtaltarians agree and frankly hell stands more chance of freezing over.

Only just saw that this was a response to me. I think I dealt with the points in my original comment. Looks pretty legal to me. If a better video clip came forwards I'd look at it, but I think the ruling on the field was pretty much spot on. The best view came from the referee, and he thought it was fine.

I think you will find no one other than Otto went off on one. The discussion about the tackle and Gibraltar Rugby was going quite well with interesting points being tabled.

I totally agree though, what a shame in this century that a member EU country such as Spain continues to employ bad tactics and pettiness over sport, particularly rugby. They failed in the end to stop Gibraltar being recognised by UEFA and eventually they will fail with rugby. Lets hope that the Rugby authorities see sense abd don't allow it to drag on for years and years.

Is there room to bring in religion to this debate? I mean, whilst we're all going to find reasons to hate each other; aside from the usual Anglo v Celtic thing, Franco v Anglo, everyone v Anglo, NH v SH, why not add more fuel to the fire?

Bloody hell RD looks like you've opened a can of worms...

Crazy how crazy politics can make people, when at the end of the day we all put on our numbered jerseys and are all 'rugby players' - put differences aside and direct dislike to footballers and we'll all be fine!

No one is arguing about the referee's decision we are having a healthy debate on the footage shown and some of the other issues surrounding Gibraltar and its rugby. Unless you where at the FIRA meeting last year (which I doubt) then you will not know what happened which is a shame but I suspect given your viewpoint you probably wouldn't care anyway.

Secondly your grasp of International Politics is extremely poor to say the least. The United Nations asked in 1961 that member states take swift and decisive action to resolve the issue of self governing territories to transfer power freely without conditions to the people in those territories. 99.64% of people in Gibraltar voted to remain British. Gibraltar today is a mix of all faiths living in a small area with no issues. Crime is low and economic success means that on a daily basis approx. 7000 Spanish residents from La Linea have jobs they wouldn't have thanks to Spanish mismanagement of its own economy. Now please shut up about Spain and Gibraltar. Stay on topic if you want to contribute or go away.

An excellent follow up article can also be found here on the Gibraltar v Israel match.

    http://rugbyredefined.com/

Despite the size of Gibraltar and its 'over commitment' to the other ball sport (although in fairness they had been battling political issues with the European football powers for years) Rugby in Gibraltar appears to be emerging at last and deserves as much support as possible. Petty political arguments are not helping be it on here, government or at EU/World administrate level. I assume all these lads and more importantly the 100s of children behind them want to do is play their sport, for their country, at the highest level.

FIRA-AER gets mentioned in the introduction to the video bij RD. So that's completely ON topic. As is rugby in general. Personal political frustrations are not. The tackle was dangerously awesome. There was a serious risk to his pride. The intention was there to be a fucking legend. As a result of this tackle the tackled player bought him a drink in the bar afterwards, which can lead to liver disease.

This sort of tackle could encourage young children to be dangerously awesome themselves.

The Maldives? nice trolling! do you think you are Barrack Obama or something? Why should either the Falklands or Gibraltar be handed over to the Spanish or Argentinians? 99% of the people living on both want to remain as it is? I don't see Spain offering Morocco back Cueta or Melilla?

Yes xxxldave, Gibraltar does have a excellent prospect for the future at Exeter and he isn't alone there are others to playing at a high standard back in the UK. As someone mentioned not bad for a place no bigger than a small town. Rugby in Gibraltar consists of mini's over a hundred children, Under 14s through to colts. A four league team system which each team consisting of a squad of 30 players and senior team. Even though Gibraltar passed their assessment under FIRA the Spanish contingent (one is the current Treasurer) was allowed to make a unprecedented presentation at the AGM against Gibraltar. A sorry day for the world of rugby.

In this case, it does not look like dangerous play.

  • 4:52 AM 26/02/2014

Absolutely nothing wrong with that, impact everything to do with physics, bigger man, perfect angle, balls carrier too upright, and this proves to me that you can make this hit and grasp!

reading some of the comments is a bit confusing? nowhere ever have i seen a game (pro, semi-pro, amateur) where that would of been a penalty or red card or anything?? tackle wasnt high, his left arm stayed wrapped and he doesnt land dangerously... whats the problem here? somebody please enlighten me :)

Agreed stroudos, I remember hearing that there was a backrow youngster from Gibralter who had gotten himself into one of the academies in England, Exeter I think.. Can't be to many teams in Gibralter so its nice to see there is some young talent coming through. Also to make things better he was intent on playing for Gibralter, Not England..

I think this tackle was all sorts of legal. Admittedly we've not got much to go on because the available clips aren't great quality, but it looks like he tries to get his right arm around and the way the tackled player spins slightly seems to suggest he was gripping slightly with a left hand.

a good thing the ref didn't mistake the red jerseys for the Crusaders.

Otherwise, it would have been a penalty try and a straight red to Kaplan.
