Mathieu Bastareaud makes big rib tickling tackle on Metuisela Talebula

Toulon's Mathieu Bastareaud, often affectionately referred to as the Tank, is the type of player you generally want to avoid when he has ball in hand. His ability to get over the gain line is what makes him so valuable a player. His tackling isn't half bad either.

Bordeaux wing Metuisela Talebula experienced the full (considerable) weight of the man this past weekend when Toulon beat Bordeaux 22-20 in a tight Top 14 clash. Talebula received an awful, floated pass from centre Julien Rey, and got man and ball at the exact same time.

Unfortunately for him that man was Bastareaud, who took full advantage of the hospital pass to make this big rib tickling tackle, earning Toulon a turnover as a result. Fair play to Talebula for keeping his eyes on the ball and taking the hit though.

Freddie Michalak, who made an interesting pass here, actually scored 14 of his team's points on the day though, with Bryan Habana scoring a try as Toulon came back from trailing 20-9 at one stage.

"To win the match after a catastrophic first half where we weren't in the match, I have to congratulate the players for their comeback," said acting head coach Pierre Mignoni.

Toulon are third on the Top 14 table, equal with Clermont one point behind Montpellier. They face Perpignan in Barcelona this weekend, while Bordeaux, in 7th place, are away at Stade Francais.

Agreed. I chose Bastareaud for my ESPN fantasy team and wished I hadn't.

He wasn't able to offer anything to the team. Tuilagi may not be the most incredible passer of the ball, but still offers more going forward. I think international teams have shown that unless the big fella has a little bit of sparkle, a little bit of magic, then they can shut them down most of the time.

He was just too predictable. He only passed the ball when he got tired, and by then it was too late.

Having said all that, he might have looked better if the team as a whole had been playing well.

I feel he has not progressed at all from his breakthrough season. He can draw in defenders and break some tackles but a lot of the time he just ends up running straight into the guy or throwing a forward pass. Personally I thought that working with Giteau and Wilkinson would have helped his passing and awareness but he just is a one trick pony. If he was to slim down and become more lean then he would be a lot more dynamic and would be an overall better player. Tuilagi is very limited but he atleast is a threat almost everytime he gets the ball.

Exactly, that also shows how doubtful we are, in France, about this player, especially in the national at centre position provided that we have many other possibilities there.

May I ask others forumers what are your thoughts about him?

I cannot agree more with your comment. I used to love this player but his nonchalant behaviour, as you rightly put it, puts me off.
He always makes reckless moves, secretly hoping that his (huge) talent will show up and magically correct it. It used to work when he was young, but as time goes by he looks more and more stupid on a rugby field, and consistently puts his teammates in desperate situations.
Carter played like this when he was young, casually kicking penalties and not looking a bit worried when missing crucial ones. Then he changed his attitude and raised up to be consistently the top player in the world . Quade Cooper is maturing too now. Michalak never did.

Typical Michalak pass. Pisses me off. Can't stand how nonchalant he can be.

"Mathieu Bastareaud, often affectionately referred to as the Tank".

He is also meanly referred as BastaGros, which could be translated "BasFatreaud". :p

Which one? Blue 12 or Michalak's one at the end? Cause both deserve the comment. ^^

Which browser are you using? It looks like it's still there in Firefox & IE at least. Not in Chrome for some reason. Will investigate.
