Mathieu Bastareaud smashes Alex Lozowski with MONSTER hit

Against Saracens this past weekend Mathieu Bastareaud reminded everyone that he's still one of the game's biggest hitters, and that you can indeed still make enormous, legal hits in a rugby union match. His effort is without a doubt one of the biggest of the year so far.

Saracens fullback Alex Lozowski was the unfortunate recipient of the crushing tackle from the giant French centre, with just under ten minutes to play. As Saracens nursed a seven point lead, Lozowski went on the attack and managed to spin out of a Ma'a Nonu tackle, only to be rag-dolled by the lurking Bastareaud.

If that wasn't enough, hard-hitting USA forward Samu Manoa was there a split second later, ensuring Lozowski never stood a chance.

Credit to Lozowski, who somehow kept whatever wits he still possessed, as he held onto the ball and made sure possession was not lost.

Minutes earlier in the same passage of play Bastareaud had secured two excellent turnovers for Toulon, so despite his massive frame, he's shown that his work rate is not an issue.

A Chris Ashton try helped Saracens to a 10-3 victory and a home Champions Cup quarter-final, while Leigh Halpenny's boot ensured that Toulon secured a bonus point and also advanced to the quarter-final round.

Nice one Dan. Reckon you've got the January comment-of-the-month award sewn up with that.

Who was that Aussie rugby league player who had a penchant for violating his opponents? There was something very wrong there.

With that in mind, I can think of a few rugby relationships that might enter into the biology realm.....Either that or the plain old sexual harassment realm....

If he now goes from being a total monster in the cup and becomes a waste of space in the 6N, it'll be the most Bastareaud thing ever.

    Most tackles are physics.

What Haskell and Farrell have? That's chemistry.

"Yes!! Got past Nonu! Nice one! Woooh.... oh shiiiiiiiii.............!

Lovely tackle by Bastareaud, a sight to behold. Like O'Driscoll*, I'm even more impressed by how Lozowski dealt with that, kept the ball and presented it beautifully, then jumped up as if it was just a run-of-the-mill hit.

    * I reckon this could be the only time I ever get to use the phrase "like O'Driscoll, I..."

Textbook tackle! Great tackle! It really puts to shame all the high, swinging arm or no arms tackles that are so trendy nowadays.

I watched the whole game and quite frankly Nonu was abysmal. I just cannot comprehend how a player of his caliber can play so bad. Hi missed at least three tackles like that and Basta was there to cover him every single time. He surely owns Basta a pint or two!

Bastareaud is in great form currently. As a French supporter I am very glad he is back in the team. I hope he can boost les bleus attack.

Bastareaud is back in the French squad for the 6N following Fofana's unfortunate injury
(which is a real pity as I was looking forward to watching that Lamerat-Fofana centre pairing play in blue.......)

Surely this is just physics. Nice tackle though. Lozowski presents the ball nicely, considering he must have had doubts which way was up!
